Dob vs. equatorial mount

Posted By tom conti

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a Newtonian reflector on an equatorial mount as compared to a Dobsonian? Is it just price?

Orion SkyView Pro 8 EQ vs. SkyView Deluxe 8 EQ

Posted By tom conti

Does anybody see a big difference between these 2 scopes? I just recieved the Orion catalog and these look like good equatorial mounted scopes. The Pro 8 EQ seems to have a VERY sturdy mount. How does the tracking work? It can come with TrueTrack single or dual drives. What exactly does the drive do and how hard/easy is it to work? Thanks for the info as always,

Last Question....maybe

Posted By tom conti

Okay, so let me see if I've got this right. I should go with an 8" or 10" Dob for now. Then, when I've become proficient with that, I can put the same scope on an equatorial mount. When I become familiar with that, I can buy a drive for it and begin to contemplate astrophotography. Does this sound right? How hard/easy is it to move the scope to an equatorial mount? How much is a good mount (astrophotography-capable) for an 8" or 10" scope? Thanks for your time, I owe you all a beer!!

thanks for the info!

I guess I'll go with an 8" or 10" dob, learn what's in the sky, and save for an EQ-mounted scope later on down the road. I've read that these scopes can go for a good many years, so my son (6 months old now) may end up with a really nice scope to learn on when he's 5 or 6!

FOV question

Posted By tom conti

How long does an object stay in the FOV of an 8" dob? I know it would differ based on the object but what about Jupiter or Saturn?

Can anybody with an 8 or 10 inch dob post a detailed picture of the base? There is no good place around here to check out scopes. Not many starparties going on this time of year, it's been so hot there is a perpetual night haze in the summer. Besides, I work 2 job, am working on my masters, and have a 6 month old child. I don't get out much!
