Adjustable Lens Cell - Important?

Posted By Bob Hanson

AN adjustable lens cell is usually more important for longer focal length instruments than it is for the short tube variety. Simple stuff, realy...

Imagine that you are trying to sight in on a star with a 2000mm instrument. If its lens is .1 degree off then you will probably not see your star even if you were right on it. Now if your thing has a focal length of just 600mm and the same aperture then you are still gona get the star in the very wide field of view.

In all honesty, I have had a couple of these wonderful 120mm refractors (a Skywatcher 120 f8.3 and an Orion 120-ST) and have had no problems regarding colimation. If the manufacturer does his job (regarding the machining of the cell and assembly of the OTA proper) then you won't have problems. But to answer your question, no... an adjustable cell on the Astroview 120-ST is not all that important... besides, if you don't like it, Orion will take it back!
