Russel Optics crosshair eyepieces

Posted By Fernando Martins

Does anybody has experienced these crosshair eyepieces, especially the 12mm ?
I know that Russel works well with the optics but as his crosshair eyeppieces have fixed reticles I really don't know if this could be a problem to get a good focus.

Phil,

I had no more e-mails from you since last day 13 when I sent you the cash by paypal for the 26mm eyepiece.
I need to know if everything is Ok and if you already shipped the eyepiece.
I tried to contact you but all my e-mails have returned with the message "over quota".
You have to delete some e-mails in your mailbox to fix the problem.
Please contact me as soon as possible :

Yellow Green (11) or Yellow (12) filter

Posted By Fernando Martins

Which is better for Jupiter and Saturn in a SCT 5" ?
I already have the 8 and 82A but as some people say that the 11 and 12 are also good filters for planets I would like to read more opinions about them.

Hi Barry.

Here is a link about astronomy terms and glossary :

You may find very good information at Orion's Website (Learning center):

Good luck,

4-inch to 8-inch: Not Enough?

Posted By Fernando Martins

Hi Steve.

I have almost the same doubt, but in my case to upgrade from a SCT 5" to a SCT 8".
Specifically this comparison (premium refractor 4"x dob 8") I never have experienced but last weekend for the first time I had the opportunity to make a comparison side by side between my Nexstar 5 and a Nexstar 8 during almost 6 hours.
I noticed a slightly better contrast for nebulas and globulars but just a tenuous, hardly noticeable difference for galaxies.
I confess I was expecting a "WOW, what a difference !!" but this not happened.
I have moderate light pollution in my city (mag limit = 5.3) and some people say this may limit the performance of larger apertures.
To check this with my own eyes, I decided to try this comparison again in a darker site.
Next 26 we go to a very dark site, an observatory of a friend in another place, located in a top of a hill (altitude 1200m), 15 miles away from the nearest town and with very low light pollution.
I'll report you my experience next sunday,27 if we have good weather on 26.

Nexstar 5 Eyepieces

Posted By Fernando Martins

Hi Tom.
I also own a Nexstar 5i and have replaced almost all my "chinese" eyepieces during last months, this helped me to get better views.
This is my current set:
- UO orthos : 5,7,9 and 12,5mm
- Meade SP 12,4mm (old design, made in Japan)
- TV Plossls 15 and 17mm
- Celestron Axiom 19mm
- Celestron Ultima 30mm
- Nexstar Plossl 40mm

The orthos are excelent for planetary and double star observing (not so affected by the LP).
If you have problems with the city lights you should try a good UHC filter.
This filter really helps for some nebulas in a sky with LP.

Focal Reducer Information

Posted By Fernando Martins

Hi Ray.

I removed the doublet achromat lens of a finder 6x30 and wrapped it with black Scotch tape around the barrel of an old 1.25" prism diagonal.
I have a Nexstar 5i f/10 and I think I got a focal reduction about x 0.55 because I put a Celestron Ultima 30mm in the diagonal and I could see nearly all three stars of the Orion's belt.
I noticed some field curvature near the edge but the AFOV is really huge.
I estimate 2,2ยบ or more AFOV with the Ultima 30mm.
If you can't reach focus remove the barrel of the diagonal and find out the correct distance to place the lens.
I'm thinking to cut about 1cm of the diagonal barrel to reduce the focus travel but I have to leave enough room for the visual back screws.

Any one have orion highlight plossls

Posted By Fernando Martins

Hi Dale.

I already tried the 17 and 26mm.
They have a very nice looking but honestly I couldn't see any difference in optical quality.
