Built-in barlow in a binoviewer?

Posted By Levente Szarka

Hi Gang,

I'm new to binoviewing so please excuse me if I ask stupid questions. Recently, I tried a cheap binoviewer (purchased in Europe) in an Orion Starmax 127 and I was surprised to experience that I did NOT need to change focus when I put it into the diagonal. Also, the eye relief of the 25 mm eyepieces _doubled_. Is it possible that this unit employs a barlow lens?

Thank you for reading and greetings from Hungary,
Levente

Difference between Celestron and Orion 80ED

Posted By Levente Szarka

Soon after Orion hit the market with their 80ED apo refractor Celestron also did so. As I see Orion sells the bare OTA for $499 while Celestron sells the telescope complete with eyepiece, finder, diagonal for $409. I guess both telescope uses Synta 80ED lens but what other differences are expected between them? I know the Orion is equipped with a Crayford-focuser but how about the lens cell, baffling and finish? Which of them has collimatable lens cell?

There are many reviews out on the Orion 80ED, but I can find any on the Celestron 80ED.

I'm considering to order a Celestron 80ED so I welcome your comments pro or contra.
Thanks,
Levente

Is it worth replacing the corrector of the ETX90?

Posted By Levente Szarka

I have a Meade ETX90 OTA and the aluminium spot on the corrector lens is defective. The outer parts seem to be oxidized (I see colorful rings) but the optics give suprisingly good images. The whole corrector should be replaced but as far as I know it is not possible without replacing the matching primary.

Is there anyone who could give me an estimation how much Meade would charge for replacing the complete optical set? I wonder if it is worth at all :C , supposing I could buy the OTA for around $150 here, on Astromart.

Thanks,
Levente

Radial Guider manual question

Posted By Levente Szarka

I purchased a Celestron Radial guider but found no manual in the box. I was told by the dealer that it is not required as the guider is very simple to use. Is there anyone who purchased this item and can tell me if manual is supplied or not?

Thanks,
Levente

Opinion on this telescope interferogram?

Posted By Levente Szarka

Hello Everyone,

Just wondering what is your opinion on this 200/800 Newtonian telescope based on the following interferogram images.

Test wavelength: 632.8 nm
Evaluation wavelength: 550.0 nm

RMS: 0.0348
P-V: 0.233
Strehl ratio: 0.953
Astigmatism: 0.039 Axis 11
Coma: 0.0138 Axis 52
SA: -0.0148 P-V -0.0495
Based on 180 points

Why do the intra and extrafocal images show some "squariness"?

Thanks,
Levente

C11 or C9.25?

Posted By Levente Szarka

Hello Lynn,

There is an article on cloudynights.com which compares a Celestron 11 against a Meade 12. Worth reading! Oh, and the link: http://www.cloudynights.com/reviews3/meade12v11.htm

GSO 32mm Plossls

Posted By Levente Szarka

Hello Jeff,

It seems Celestron Omni Plossls are the same as GSO plossls EXCEPT they are mounted in differend body. Look for fully multicoated optics with blackened lens edges and you won't be disappointed. They are very decent eyepieces for the money. I especially like the design of the Omni plossls.

Re: Weird things with BlackNight binoviewers?

Tom,

I don't think you read my original post. I deleted it soon after posting because I realized I should spend more time with the BN to say a more estabilished opinion. Both positive and negative. I must admit this is the first binoviewer in my hands, so I didn't know how a binoviewer would look like in DETAILS and would work with MY eyes.

Please note, I had sent my questions directly to Harry BEFORE posting them here. He was EXTREMELY helpful and I'm pretty confident that he is doing his best to satisfy his customers.
