Diligent Mama at Work

Posted By Paul Casper

When I first saw this Killdeer she was running around helter-skelter on the ground. Then, she plopped down in one spot and refused to move. I got closer and closer until I took my pictures at about 15 feet. Then I backed off so as to not stress her more than I already had. If you look closely, you can see an egg poking out. Strange that they nest out in the open on the ground like that. Canon 10D, 400mm f/5.6, handheld.

Never realized spoonbills had such big feet....all the better to dredge up tasty morsels from the mud I guess.

There's that annoying photographer again...

Georgeous birds....Gatorland in Kissimmee, Florida has a gang of 'em wandering around. I wish they were more in abundance in the wild...maybe some day.

Look kids!! A yummy snake for breakfast!

Posted By Paul Casper

Momma heron allowed one of the chicks to swallow most of the snake, then pulled it out and swallowed it herself. No doubt planning to bring it up again later after a bit of digestion. In the high resolution version I can see numerous punctures near the snakes' head, probably by momma heron to convince him to come along quitely.

Been a while since I posted, and you guys have been busy. Lots of amazing pictures posted and my compliments to you all. This is a real quality forum (unlike numerous others I visit) and I hope we can keep it that way...

Open up, *&%$* Turtle!!

Posted By Paul Casper

Caught this Crested Caracara trying to convince the turtle to join him for lunch. He finally got mad, gave up and flew off. The turtle was unhurt, even though the bird worked on him for at least 5 minutes!

Snowy Egret

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. I feel a little less nervous now! I will dig out a few more photos to post in the next few days. Also, if there is anyone else on the forum using the TV-85 scope I would sure like to compare notes.

Opinions wanted

Chris,

I have no experience with TC's but I understand that the 10D wont autofocus with lens apertures below 5.6. With a 2.8 lens, a 2X TC should result in 5.6 and work just fine. That's a good reason to get a 2.8 lens if you want to use TC's. for more reach.
