I recommend you buy the book by Michael Covington. It will answer most of your questions. The book by Robert Reeves is good also.

The Sky and other software will do this nicely. The Sky will show you the area of coverage.

The pebbled surface sounds like pyrex. Beryllium coating has been advertised in S&T for many years. The mirror could be 20 or 30+ years old.
Before I spend a lot of money on it, I would give it a foucalt test, or a star test as Suiter spells out in his book.
Just another shot in the dark. (I do a lot of that with scopes, since 1958.)

I have been down the one shot color road more than once. It seems a natural switch from film or DSLR. However, I have founf that the quality of the photos not nearly as good as filtered monochromatic. Don't be afraid of Photoshop. There is no easy way to get quality stuff.

Runaway slews on Advanced Series CG-5 GoTo mount.

I have has this problem with an Astro-Physics mount. It actually blew the drive motors. I discovered a ground loop betweem my regulated power supply and the mount. the supply was in physical and electrical contact with the mount. Be sure your power supply is isolated from the mount and tripod.
