Do I need at BinoVue Prism Compensator?

Posted By Dave Bush

I strongly urge you to read the binoviewer review on CloudyNights.com. Here's the link:

http://www.cloudynights.com/accessories2/binoviewers.htm

I've spoken with the author at lenght and the maker of the Denkmeier unit. That unit was just upgraded to include baffling to reduce glare to near zero.

The review basically puts the Denkmeier unit a bit above the TeleVue and at over $400 less. You will not need anything additional to use it with an SCT.

A radical new telescope design?

Posted By Dave Bush

Ron,

I've seen you posts here and other places (S.A.A.) and I've been wondering, why do you feel it is necessary to put the "ee" in you last name in brackets?

APM 30 mm Widescan

Posted By Dave Bush

If your referring to the new WideScan III, and I believe you are, I've got one on the way from Kendrick Astrosystems.

Jim Kendrick has tested it out and to quote him...

"Yes, the eyepiece is a winner. Amazing APOV, half the weight and less than
half the price of a Nagler 31mm with better edge to edge field sharpness. I
will be adding these to my own collection."

He said that they are going to list them at $410 Canadian which translated to $229 US. I got the only one he has for now.

What good is 60° FOV if it is not clear?

Posted By Dave Bush

Some people, me included to a certain degree, find thta the wider AFOV does to the overall image what a good frame does to a fine painting.

When looking at a fine painting you are not spending your time admiring the frame. Similarily with extra wide FOV eyepieces, many will spend the majority of the time looking at the center 45 to 50 degrees or so. What is beyond that is the frame. While the stars may not be pinpoint out at the edges, they help convey the "in space" effect that youi dont get with a 50 degree field stop.

Again, all this is VERY subjective.

Is anybody really confused re Meade 5K Plossl?

Posted By Dave Bush

Mike,

Thank you for the clarity that I was trying (very unsuccessfully) to bring to this discussion.

Axiom 50mm

Posted By Dave Bush

I have owned this eyepiece and used it extensively in my C9.25 and a Meade 8" SCT. It is so very sweet. Not too much eye relief like most 50+ degree plossls but just enough to be comfortable. Absolutely pinpoint sharp from edge to edge.

This eyepiece is essentially not an Axiom but rather an Ultima. It is a five element masuyama design and highly likely identical optically to the 50mm Tak LE which costs so much more.

Meade 4000 Super Plossl "Japan" 4 or 5 element

Posted By Dave Bush

For a very brief time, the five element (Masuyama design) were made with the rubberized barrels similar to the later four elements designs.

The way to tell if you have one of these (other than optically counting the reflections) is that the word "Japan" was stamped at the bottom edge of the black barrel. The later four element models that were made in Japan had that stamped on the lower, chrome barrel.
