Can anyone recommend a source for lens cells?

Posted By Bill Barrett

We are a small group about to build our first scopes (refractors). We have some loose lenses, but need a source for the cells to mount them in. If anyone could steer us in the right direction, it would be appreciated. Thank you, Bill

Zeiss f5.6/300 lens?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I have just been given a Zeiss F5.6/300 lens. It is mounted in a Zeiss lens cell. I have no idea what it came off...I don't think it was a telescope. I'm not sure what the F5.6/300 actually refers to since the lens appears to be right around 80mm. Any info. would be greatly appreciated.

Adapting focusers for refractors

Posted By Bill Barrett

It seems like there are relatively few aftermarket focusers for refractors. I was wondering if an aftermarket reflector type focuser could be adapted by milling flat the base plate, then making and mmounting it to a new end plate in the refractor?

Has anyone made a break down refractor?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I have a 4" F15 lens which needs a home, and I was thinking of making an OTA which breaks down into three sections. It would be portable and the parts would thread together. Maybe I haven been looking in the right places, but I haven't seen one before. Is there any reason not to try it? thank you, Bill

Aperture & resolution (if all things were equal)

Posted By Bill Barrett

I have been debating with a friend of mine, that if all things were equal (not considering field of view, chromatic aberration, baffling etc.) more aperture=more light gathering ability=better resolution at = magnification. He contends one is not a function of the other. any thoughts?

What is needed to view the transit of Venus?

Posted By Bill Barrett

I have never done any solar observing and was wondering what would be needed to safely view the transit of Venus? I'll probably be using a Pronto. thank you, Bill
