Fantastic animation! They are always so cool to me. I hope to one day assemble one. Great work, download time was nothing (satellite).

4 Hole Aperture Mask

Posted By Mark Bolton

A little late into this thread but I have used one, two and 4 hole masks for focusing as well as for imaging the bright moon with my SCT/CCD. I am wondering if the reason you see better images with the mask is that it facilitates you getting a much better focus than you normally would. I realize this could sound kind of insulting to an advanced observer but I often wonder if the mask perhaps accentuates even the slightest focus issues?

Just a thought off the cuff,
Mark

Cygnus Wide field

Nice FOV, its neet that NGC6995/Cirrus is peeking out. Too many open clusters to count right down to little ones like NGC6811. It would be interesting to compare it to a piggy back film shot of the same region to see what is gained.

Great shot,
Mark

Steve,
Fantastic image of a tough object. I have tried this object a few times and its a real difficult one. You did a fantastic job. The faint outer arms are really spectacular.

Nice,

Re: 18" Starstructure altitude bearings

Michael,
Thanks for the reply, I asked simply because of the complex shapes and profiles. I wasnt sure if you were having them cut (edm, etc) by an outside source. Its usually cheaper that way unless you are large scale. The mig/tig issue was not so much a though of strength just a question in general.

I have a friend who races superstock and has recently build a dragster and he often talks of the tricks you mention. A leg up is alwyas in the back of everyones mind. smile

Encke Division

Posted By Mark Bolton

I think all this talk of Encke is a good exercise for everyone who does planetary imaging. Its a great reference with regards to the recent talk of "rotating color filters" in the User Film and CCD forum although it was moreso relating to DSO's. Coincidenatally there is the recent article in Astronomy magazine which showcases images by Damian Peach, Ed Grafton, and Tan Wei Long. Tan is the only imager using a Tuocam but in the past has always used and st5c. I think the comparisons are interesting.

For any interested, both Tan Wei Long and Damian Peach used to be (and may still be) regulars in the IRC chat #sciastro. I am not sure what server they are on but you could probably find it on www.sciastro.net .

Jeff,
Like you said, the "feel" of both images is really great. The moon makes them look almost like twighlight. Couple nice post card there.

Bobcat

Posted By Mark Bolton

Gosh,
I was reading through the replies feverishly as I too have tried many times to get an image of a bobcat in the wild. To the extent of building blinds after studying their routes for long periods and trying to simply be "in the right place at the right time". Of course I have yet to be successful with many many hours of effort hehe.

This would have been a once in a lifetime shot especially with such a short lens. A spectacular one none the less. Hope my tracking pays off at some point. I have had many local hunters and trappers offer to help me call one in however I am hoping to one day catch one without the need.

Great image,
Mark

Very Nice Steve, High density isnt the word for it. Thats right in the thick of it for sure. I really like all the small faint nebulosity.
