Looking into New Scopes.. Questions.

Posted By John Linc

I currently have a C9.25, on GM8 Mount. I am selling this set up because I have not used it in the longest time, and I want something Bigger. I am not interested in astrophotography, and the whole set up of the EQ mount ect. ect. I want something I can carry out side just for the use of Viewing the night Sky. If I had the money I would keep my current set up, and buy another Telescope as in the reading I have done most enthusiasts have a collection of scopes. <----- not an option at this time.
I am really interested in the Discovery PDHQ 10" F/6 or 12.5" F/5 DOBs.

Now I should tell you I live in a pretty light polluted area. I live in Ohio, right on Lake Erie and I think it's pretty well documented that the seeing is average to fair at best on most clear nights.
I don't mind hopping in my car to head East a bit toward PA to hit some dark areas, but for the most part I stick to a close by park, and school yard for openness.

I really like the reviews from what I have read about the Discovery DOBs, and only want to spend about 2k on a new scope. (I have a few EPs ect. from my current scope I can use on a new scope)
Given the information I have left you, do you think I am taking the right route?
What about a nice Refractor? How does a D.10" DOB fair against my Current C9.25 with App being so close? Is the brightness of the 12.5" (I think its 44% increase over the 10") side by side the 10" that noticeable?
I am also aware that DOB's don't have a EQ mount to move with the sky, that is not to much of concern to me. Really I am looking for performance given my average sky conditions, factoring the best bang for the buck type thing.
I was not impressed with "dog biscuit" issue surrounding the Orion Mirrors due to them being solely machined and not hand made(correct me if I am wrong), so that's kind of out of the question.
Anyways I thought I would bring my questions to the pro's before I made a decision, so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
I hope I posted in the right forum.

Bino help

Posted By John Linc

I pretty much did a copy and paste job from another site I posted to last night..

I roughly split my time between land viewing, and some star gazing. I have been reading and reading posts from all over the net and I am having a hard time finding any reviews on these binos, "Oberwerk 12-36x70 Zoom". Right now I have a set of Bushnell 7-21X40 zoom, and they are just getting old and beat up. As much as haveing full App seems appealing, I know I will miss the zoom effect during land episodes so I have decided to stick with a zoom Bino.. What I want to know is has anyone in here actually seen any reviews on this product? I can't seem to find much googling it. I have tried many other forums with a couple of meek posts so I figured I would post here. Any help and advice is very much welcomed. Actually what I am looking for is someone who has actually used these binoculars, not just anyone stating that "all" zoon bino's are garbage etc.
PS sorry for any typo's. What I really jonze for are the 25/40X100's.. man If only had the cash lol.

Question Please

Posted By John Linc

I am not sure what to buy. I am moving for to a high floor apartment and I want to look out over long distances. I live right on lake Erie, but also I am an avid star gazer. At one time I build a 9.25C with a Losmandy Mount a few years back. So I love both types of viewing, terrestrial and astronomy. Money it tight but I have it narrowed down to two units. The Zhumell Tachyon 25x100 or Barska 30x80 x-trail. I read on cloudy nights a pretty decent review on the Barska. I giving up the 5x mag worth the +20mm gain in appature and light gain? I want to also look out at night out on the streets below and I wand I don't want to be nagged to much by a dim FOV, but I love the 30x.

Anything help here would be soo much appreciated. I need to decide here. Thank you SOO muchsmile)

Best Binoculars that I have ever looked through

Posted By John Linc

Zhumell 25x100 binoculars have brought in better views some pretty nice scopes. I'm thrilled with these. I can't believe I'm looking at the rings of Saturn and it's moons with Binoculars. Looking out at Lake Erie from my 12th floor has never been such a joy, and yeah there are some lights, moving objects that I cannot account for. Very cool. Optics are unbelievably clear and stay in focus long after I have found the "sweet" spot. If anyone has something else for me to look into I would appreciate it.
Thanks.

Anyone use one of these?

Posted By John Linc

Rick I am glad you made this topic. I would also like to know how well these Collimator Eyepieces work, or if they are really necessary at all. I am going to be getting a new C9.25 delivered in the next week or so and I want to get on top of this stuff now.) /bump

AstroZap vs Meade dew shields

Posted By John Linc

I would like to know if material really matters. I got a rubber one from dewshield.com. I wont really know the effectiveness of one these shields until the weather gets warmer around here, about a month and a half.
