Is God only in the human mind?

Posted By Josh Williams

Okay, I certainly don't mean to start any religious warfare here with this question, but I'm definately interested in how everyone would respond to this, both believers and atheists alike, and everything in between. Without man, (or perhaps more specifically, the complexity of the human mind) does God exist? Again, no blasphemy or warfares intended, just rather curious as to what everyone has to say to this.

First time Telescope.

Well I was thinking I could put the tripod/mount in my regular luggage (as in not carry-on) and just take the OTA as carry on.

Orion Mak vs. Stellarvue refractor

Posted By Josh Williams

Thanks everybody. Sounds like the SV 102 is getting the most votes here. So I'll probably go with this from what everybody is saying. Although, I do have just one more question. Have any of you who have had or used this scope experienced any of those so called "awkward positions" when viewing through this scope close to the zenith?
P.S. the 5 in. Intes Mak I think is now another consideration. Hmmm! Thank you to all who responded.

Recommended First Scope???

Posted By Josh Williams

Orion XT 6. Dobs always make great first scopes for beginners seeing as how they're really easy to move around and really smooth, and with this particular scope, you can just pick it up by the handle and bring it out, virtually no set up. Plus 6 in. is definately enough that you'll be able to pick out all of the major gems of the sky and then a lot of the fainter fuzzies too. Well, there's my two cents.Clear skies and good luck on making your decision.

A question to the non-religious:origin of morals

Posted By Josh Williams

I'm not exactly "non-religious" but I'm not religious by any means either. The extent of my religious belief(s) is that I do believe there is something higher than we humans on this earth. Something we will never be able to touch, tangibly. I'm fairly certain there's a word for this, but not quite sure what it is...agnostics perhaps? Anywho, onto why I'm responding to this. I'm actually kinda' surprised nobody has said this yet (or maybe someon has and I just overlooked it), but I would think the idea that if your action(s) hurt another person(s) in any way, shape, or form, then you shouldn't do it, but if on the other hand your action(s) are beneficial to another person(s), then by all means... This seems like a pretty logical foundation of morality, to me at least.

Finest Large Focuser?

Posted By Josh Williams

This may be a stupid and obvious question, but why would one need something larger than 2 in. since that's the largest diameter of ep's. I'm guessing it's gonna' have something to do with CCD imaging and cameras.

Why are we "alive"?

Posted By Josh Williams

Does anyone know, where along this undescribably long chain of chemical reactions we become alive, as in animate?

Free Will

Posted By Josh Williams

What about the fact that we humans, like everything else in this universe, are made up of atoms, and therefore subject to the same physical laws which govern these atoms? Aren't we then all just the affect of one physical law after another, thus not giving us no free will?

Is God only in the human mind?

Posted By Josh Williams

The question of the existence of god without a consciousness to conceptualize it/him is somewhat akin to the old paradox about a tree falling in the forest without anybody there to hear it.

It's funny that you mention this, seeing as how this is exactly what was going through my mind when typing this thread.

one would be hard pressed to extend the argument that a god can exist if no one exists to believe in it/him.

While this is definately a good point, and pretty much the heart of what I was trying to get at, what you mentioned about a universe without the possibility of any intelligent beings also seems quite useless like you say. And while a universe without such beings would be a reality, there just wouldn't be any beings around to marvel at it's beauty.
