Anybody build their own?

Posted By Michael O Gaynes
I've built (and heavily modified) a couple of kits, neither of which are still available. An Arion Adonis vacuum-tube based integrated amp from Ireland, and a phono pre-amp from a company in Seattle(?). The Northwest has a fairly large D.I.Y. community, I believe.

I also built my own speakers from a design by Lynn Olson. A decade ago, I was amazed by what one could find on the internet.

For those of you who like to build your own scopes and mounts, get out you soldering irons and give it a try.

Budget cuts and the Mars rovers

Posted By Michael O Gaynes
Due to a directive to cut $4m, there is a proposal to put Spirit on long term hibernation and to limit the activities of Opportunity.

Microsoft/Worldwide Telescope

Posted By Michael O Gaynes
I just downloaded this and played around a little- very slick!

From the AP:

WorldWide Telescope, developed by Microsoft's research arm, knits together images from the Hubble Space Telescope, the Chandra X-Ray Observatory Center, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and others.

Computer users can browse through the galaxy on their own or take guided tours of different outer-space destinations developed by astronomers and academics.

The site lets users choose from a number of different telescopes and switch between different light wavelengths.

5 months and not a peep...

Posted By Michael O Gaynes
For an Audio forum, it's a little too quiet around here. Is everyone wearing headphones?

Alright, that's your theme: Headphones, portable amps, etc, Discuss!

A good site to whet your appetite: http://www.head-fi.org/

The new dog

Posted By Michael O Gaynes
I just brought this fellow home from the pound. If I could harness his energy, I could power power this computer. Unfortunately, there is not enough room on my lap for both - he thinks the cursor is a bug and keeps trying to lick the monitor.

What a big cutie! I'd bet you don't have to worry about any other critters sneaking up on you in the dark.

Lab: Oh, me, me!!! Pleeeeeeze let me change the light bulb! Can I? Can I? Huh? Huh? Can I?

My new Lab has decided on his own to do some telecommunications work around the house: First, he decided that the charger to my cell-phone needed "customizing". Then, the phone-line itself apparently wasn't up to code, so, he began the process of rewiring it... :S
