Reccomendation on Binoculars

Posted By Eric Daugherty

Hello,

I say buy a pair of 7x50's or 10x50's from Orion and foget it. I have a pair of UltraView 10x50's that I really like. They serve me well as all around binoculars. I also have a pair of 15x63 Mini Giants that are wonderful for scanning around. But those aren't as good at multitasking as the 10x50's and are now over $200.

Alien technology in ATM project.....

David,

Every time I see a new pic of your carbon fiber masterpice I get more impressed.

One more quick question. Did you make that mirror cell? Did you use a sling, adhesives or rigid edge support? I'm just kicking around a big dob of my own and I'm sorting out a lot of detail right now. I'd really like to use a 1.5" or 1.625" mirror to save a few lbs.

Scope Upgrade - 1 Yard Line

Cool looking scope. I'm very impressed.

Mark Harry is refiguring your mirror? Is he reasonable on his prices? I have an old Coulter 10" f/5.53 that I wouldn't mind having tweaked. It needs recopated in the worst possible way so I've been thinking of having it refigured as well. Of course if I did that I'd also have to redo the scope. Ain't rationalization the best? grin

Finder Scope Blues

Posted By Eric Daugherty

I would recomend getting a 50mm finder. You see more stars and deep sky objects in them then in a 30mm. As a bonus I 50 mm finders, under my skies at least, show the same stars as Sky Atlas 2000 so I'm all set.

I use a straight through finder on my 10" dob. I sight over the tube to get in the area then look through the finder to get it where I need to go.

If you must have a RA finder do get a unit power finder to go with it. There's a load of them on the market right now and I recomend one of the real simple red dot models like Stellarvue or Antares sells. They seem to have the biggest window to look through. Plus, they weight about a 1/3 or 1/4 of what a Telrad weighs.

Hope this helps.

Side bearing dimension

Posted By Eric Daugherty

If you read the section in the Kriege/Berry book about building a small tube dob, they reccomend having bearings 1.8x the tube diameter. So lets say your tube it 12" in diameter. So then 12*1.8=21.6. So I would say 21.5" bearings would work according to the book.
I'm not sure however if this only applies to their design.
