Aperture-Masking

Posted By Michael Kawada

I've read over and over that larger-aperture telescopes are better on nights where the seeing is good or better, and that most of the times the smaller scope (up to 6") beats the larger scope in fine detail/contrast/etc. when seeing is just average.

If that is the case, does aperture masking solve this problem? Let's say the seeing isn't good enough to use a 10" - would masking it down to 5" (or so) be a good idea? Is that the whole point of aperture masking?

Wood vs Metal Tripod (again)

Posted By Michael Kawada

I finally received the custom-made mount/tripod I purchased. Problem! It's 100% metal (aluminum and stainless steel) and extremely heavy! The tripod alone is 21 lbs compared to my Vixen wood tripod which is about 9 lbs. Question! is the metal tripod more stable than the wood in this case? The metal tripod feels extremely stable, but I also know that wood tripods tend to be more stable? Of course, I'm sure there are exeptions? Is this one of them?

Re: G-9.25 or C-11 ?

Posted By Michael Kawada

I have a 9.25 right now. One day I plan to get a C-11. If I had the money and neither scope I'd get the C-11.
I've never looked through a C-11 b4 but there's 1.75" more aperture. Also, the C-11 is the same length as the C-9 and only about 3-5 lbs heavier? Something small.

Meade 8x50 Finderscope

Posted By Michael Kawada

Are these any good? I own one and I can't really say. Are stars supposed to be sharp through them? The only things that seem to be sharp are terrestrial.

Also, why are 7x50 finders so expensive?

Photo of Jupiter/Saturn?

Posted By Michael Kawada

If it's not a problem, can someone show me what Jupiter or Saturn should look like through the eyepiece at about 300x or 400x? Realistically, not like these photographs I see everywhere.
