New Binocular Advice

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi,

I am currently looking at a decent pair of new Binoculars for Astronomy and the sort but wanted to get some advice on what might be good as far as Brands and Models. My only constraint is that I'd like to stay below $200 if at all possible. I'm currently thinking about a good pair of 10x50's but there are so many to choose from. If anyone has any ideas or advice I'd love to her it.

Thanks and clear, dark, steady skies to you,

David

Primary Tips

Posted By David Brokofsky

OK, now I know this could open a can of worms or worse but I am working on a 12.5” mirror flat that has been just laying around for a couple of years and I’ve decided that I should turn this oversized paperweight into a light bucket. What are some things I can do to insure this primary will give me sharp images when complete. Bear in mind that I’ve assisted on building a couple of other Newtonians but they weren’t built for performance.

Thanks for your help,

David

Telescope Question

Posted By David Brokofsky

I am curious if there is such thing as too much light when observing planets like Jupiter? While observing Jupiter I noticed that stopping down my Synta 120 to 60mm seemed to improve contrast and the over all view. Now somewhere in the past I've heard that stopping down one's aperture is normal when dealing with bright objects but I guess I just wanted to know some other peoples' point of view.

Thanks,

David

Herschel Question

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all, I am getting ready to start my Herschel observing list from the AL. At current my largest scope is a Skywatcher 120 Achromatic refractor but I am thinking of upgrading to a C8. Unfortunately due to budget constraints it'll have to be a used scope. My question is, would a C8 be sufficient to complete the Herschel? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Clear, dark, steady, skies to you,

Cookbook CCD Questions

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi, I've been thinking for sometime about building a CCD camera and as of recently have acquired a copy of the CCD camera cookbook. I'm curious witch of the two cameras is easiest build and how either of them performs. Bear in mind, when it comes to CCD imaging, I'm just getting started (though I'm no stranger to Astronomy) so I'm looking for as little pain as possible while making something that will last awhile. Any advice or suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.

Clear, dark, steady skies,

David

Euatorial GOTO question

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all,

I’ve been seeing a lot of the GOTO scopes and computers controlled scopes as of late, and have looked into maybe purchasing something like this. I’ve also ran into some websites showing one how to convert a standard equatorial mount into a GOTO. I’m curious if there’s anyway to convert an EQ3-2 mount into a GOTO? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Comet Watching

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all, I’ve been observing comet Machholz since early this month and have to say that it’s getting quite a bit brighter. If I remember right the predicted brightest magnitude of this comet is around 3.1. Has anyone else been keeping an eye on this comet? How about any other comets?

A quick equipment question

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all,

I'm pretty new to the world of CCD imaging but am learning as I go and planning for the future. I'm curious about the SBIG A07. How good is this camera?, I've seen it used for many very good images (particularly deep sky) and am wondering if this might be a good CCD to plan to purchase in the future. I am currently using the Cookbook 245 and learning the basics with it but I'm always looking ahead.
Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

David

Replacement Focuser for Synta

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone could recommend a replacement focuser for my Synta 4.7" Refractor? I've worked and reworked the factory focuser and I've decided that it's pretty much useless. I've seen a few nice ones out there but they are also a bit more than my budget can afford. Just curious what everyone else thinks.

A good GOTO mount?

Posted By David Brokofsky

Hi all, I was wondering if there is a good GOTO type mount I can get for my Skywatcher 230 (f/8.3)? It is optically a great performer and so I'd like to used for awhile yet before upgrading to a new scope altogether but would also like to use it for some imaging. My only problem is keeping whatever GOTO mount that might be good for this, affordable. I am currently using the Irion EQ3-2. Any ideas?

Thanks.
