Why are binoviewers so expensive?

Posted By Dale Tubbs

I would like to get some, but I don't want to pay so much for them. They cost more than I payed for my telescope or my binoculars. What is it that makes them so pricey?

Saturn with 6" f/5

Posted By Dale Tubbs

I looked at Saturn last night with my Orion reflector 6" f/5 reflector, anywhere from 90X to 225X. Judging by the star test I did, the collimation is good, but I was unable to see any detail in the planet, I couldn't even see the cassini division. Maybe my collimation is not as good as I thought, I don't know. The planet was nice and high in the sky, and seeing was pretty good because the image wasn't distorting as if under water or something. Shouldn't I be able to see more detail with this scope?

Saturn with 20X80 oberwerk LW's

Posted By Dale Tubbs

I can't seem to get a good Image of Saturn with my binoculars. Everything else looks good with them. The moon is great and the orion nebula is great, star images are good, but I can't get a defined image of Saturn. It just looks like kind of a blob. Shouldn't I be able to see a defined image of the planet and it's ring?

aperture mask

Posted By Dale Tubbs

Hello, can an aperture mask have more than one hole. I am just experimenting with my 6" reflector. I cut a round piece or cardboard and put four holes of about 35mm every 90 degrees around the circle. Will this work as an aperture mask? Thanks.

I ordered a Hardin 10"

Posted By Dale Tubbs

Last week I ordered a 32mm eyepiece from Hardin Optical, and they sent me a catalog along with it. Ever since I have been drooling over the picture of the 10" dob. I currently have a 6" Orion. I was just imagining how much more I could see with the 10". I couldn't take the agony any longer, so I ordered it tonight. Does any one else have one of these, or have you looked through one? I hope it will be a good scope. I haven't heard anything negative about them.

dew solutions for 10" dob

Posted By Dale Tubbs

Hello, last night I ordered the Hardin 10". I am anticipating dew problems this winter, if the clouds ever go away and I actually get a chance to use it. A couple of weeks ago I was outside with my 6" Orion eq. trying to look at the moon, and the image was real blurry, so I went to change to a lower X eyepiece and noticed the secondary was all fogged up. Can anyone recommend a good setup for a 10"dob. Thanks guys.

I plan to install cooling fans on the primary. Will this keep the dew off of it as well as cool it?

Got my hardin 10" today

Posted By Dale Tubbs

I put it together, but it is raining. The mount has needle bearings. On the bottom board they have a round steel plate for the bearings to ride on, but the top board has no steel plate. So the bearings just ride on the bare board. As a result, there are little divots in the board from the needle bearings, and you can feel them as the mount swivels. Evidently it is designed this way, as the diagram shows only one steel plate, and the instructions mention only one steel plate. Why doesn't it have two steel plates? It makes no sense to me.

10" f/5 secondary mirror

Posted By Dale Tubbs

Hello, somehow I got some wierd spots on my secondary mirror that don't want to come off, I even tried some acetone on them. Any way I was thinking of maybe replacing it with a secondary from protostar. My mirror is 63mm or about 2 7/16 inches. The closest size they have is 2.14 inches I believe. Would this mirror cause me to lose some of the light cone from the primary? I don't want to waste any light the 10" mirror grabs. Or do mass produced scopes have secondaries bigger than they need to be? I would just use the existing spider and mount, and cut the sides off the mount and RTV the secondary to it. Thanks

digital setting circles

Posted By Dale Tubbs

Does anyone know if I would have a problem installing the sky commander digital setting circles to a Hardin optical dobsonian mount? Thanks.
