Hubble's service

Posted By Robert Guzauskas

Look's like the Hubble's future is once again up for grabs. Here's my view:

If the Hubble's continued existence is so important to both amateur and professional astronomers, let's put our money where our mouth is. Let's start a Fund Raiser to service the Hubble!!

And maybe ANACORTES could hold the funds.

Sheet film for wide fields

Posted By Robert Guzauskas

Remember sheet film? Well...

I have a 4x5 Speed Graphic and several lenses. I intend to do some wide field astrophotography. Any suggestions on modern sheet films for my application will be greatly appreciated.

Stereo astrophotography

Posted By Robert Guzauskas

I have read passing references to the use of stereo techniques in astrophotography: it sounds like the Palomar POSS (Sky Survey) was done in stereo.

Can anyone comment or point me in the direction of "How to..." information?

Shutter failure

Posted By Robert Guzauskas

Was out last night in SE Florida. The temperature dropped quickly under a wonderfully clear sky and by 9:00 pm heavy dew settled.

Heavy dew causes my Nikon F shutter to fail. It won't trip at any speed. Dry this camera works fine.

Any ideas or suggestions will be appreciated.

Hardin for astrophotography

Posted By Robert Guzauskas

I have an 8 inch, f4 Hardin StarHOC. I can't bring my camera to focus. Do I need to move the primary mirror forward? If, "YES", by how much?

DSLR for astrophotography

Posted By Robert Guzauskas

I'm shopping for a new, digital SLR for deep sky astrophotography. I have a lot of Nikon accessories but Canon seems to dominate the deep sky. Is there something about Canon I should know?

Dry ice coolant...?

Posted By Robert Guzauskas

I have a Celestron-Williams cold camera. The 35 mm film is chilled with dry ice to, -109 degrees F. Would there be any advantage to chilling a digital in that fashion?

New films available - but why?

Posted By Robert Guzauskas

Check out, B & H Photo, in NYC, www.bhphotovideo.com

Select "Film" to browse their many offerings. Here are a few:

Rollei ATP1.1 - Advanced Technical Pan

Rollei R3 - ISO 25-6400 and see UV to near IR

Fujifilm Pro 800Z - "No reciprocity loss for 60 seconds"

More films in more formats. Why? Because film makers aren't making
money on digital that is often processed at home or not at all;
because many pros don't want to fuss with Photoshop, etc; because film is easy, and cheap, and versatile, can be scanned, and digitized: Top-of-theline DSLR with 22 megs for $3000, or, 35 mm SLR for under $1000 and 75 megs/JPEG frame on a drum scanner ($5 locally). How big is a TIFF file from a hi-res, drum scanned 35 mm? Only two files will fit on a CD (Local cost: $10 per image).
