What focal length illuminated reticle?

Posted By Shawn Filbey

Hello everyone,

I've recently changed from a fork mount to a GEM with my C-11, and am starting the polar alignment learning curve.
It seems that a decent illuminated reticle is a must-have, so the question is...what focal length is appropriate?

Scope is 2800mm, F/10. Most imaging is done using focal reducers (6.3 & 3.3).

Thanks, and clear skies,

Shawn

Phoenix has landed!

Posted By Shawn Filbey

Just finished watching the landing of Mars Phoenix near the north polar cap. Everything seems just fine. Awesome to follow it live. Sorry I didn't catch it soon enough to send a heads up to everyone here. :C

Now if the clear weather holds, a night under the stars would really cap off a good weekend....

Clear skies to all,

Shawn

ED80 adapter

Posted By Shawn Filbey

Hello all,
I just picked up an Orion ED80 here, and want to connect my Nikon D50. I have several T-rings and the adapter for the camera end, but would have to use several layers of tape to get a snug fit in the 2" EP holder. I was hoping for a rigid connection using the threads on the end of the focuser draw tube. Closest thing I've found is the 'True 2' at telescopeadapters.com, but it still is an insert into the 2" EP holder. Is that my best bet?

Thanks and CS,

Shawn

cross-posted from DSLR astrophotography - I thought this might be the better forum.

C-11 broken corrector

Posted By Shawn Filbey

Well, I think I know the answer, but have to ask.
I went to setup tonight and the corrector on my C-11 is cracked from edge to secondary holder. No clue how it happened, and guess it doesn't matter. I now have a $1000 paperweight, right?
I tried searching archives, but am apparently too distraught to do that effectively.
Any ideas other than using as a flowerpot?

regards,

ED80 lock ring

Posted By Shawn Filbey

Greetings,
I just bought the .85 reducer for my ED80 in Orion's accessory sale, and it turns out that my scope is missing a part (I bought it used here about a year ago). There should be a lock ring that screws onto the draw tube which would allow me to change the camera angle for framing. Without it, I'm forced to loosen the grub screws on the T-ring every time I want to change the orientation. Orion was really helpful - they recommended I post here! lol.. I couldn't find it at Scopestuff, either. Anybody have an idea where I could get one?

CS,

Shawn

Hybernate mode

Posted By Shawn Filbey

'Convenient' for me meant I left it right where it was. After going into hibernate, just turn the power switch off. When ready to observe again, turn power on. The display will instruct you to hit a button ( I forget which one) to return to normal functions. Select an object, and the scope should retain it's alignment and slew to the selected object as if power was never interrupted. I use it sometimes for an alignment just after dark, then hibernate until the atmosphere stabilizes for a evening viewing session. Hope this helps.

Beginer with CCD

Hi Dan,

I highly recommend the Yahoo DSI user group. There are a lot of people there that will help a lot.

Drizzle has 2 aspects - one to deal with field rotation, the other to create a larger mosaic picture. The field rotation is not a problem for you, since you are on a wedge. The drizzle mode to create a mosaic will move the scope in increments to create a larger image. The secon one I described only works with Meade mounts - not a problem for you, but a no-go with my Celestron scope.

Hope this helps,

Shawn Filbey

Newbie help picking DSLR

Posted By Shawn Filbey

Addendum - I know how noone wants to spend their time repeating the same info - I've read the Nikon D50 or D70 for astrophotography thread, and now understand that some mods (Hutech only?) allow for dual-use.

I have found a current deal on a Canon Rebel XT 8.0MP with a EF-S 18-55mm lens for $800 new - no memory included.
Is this a decent option?

2" adapter for C11?

Posted By Shawn Filbey

I use a 2" diagonal and a 2" Panoptic 35mm eyepiece on my Nexstar11 more than anything else, Dante.
You will need a 2" visual back. I would recommend one with a brass compression ring to hold that expensive glass securely.

Good luck,

Shawn
