Mare Undarum Domes?

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Here is an image from 7th November taken in good seeing and poor visibility. There are 4 raised features to the east of Dubiago W in the centre of the mare, almost lozenge shaped and they seem to be quite flat. What can they be, some kind of dome?

Langrenus, Petavius & Furnerius

Hi all,

Here is a 7 frame mosaic form 6th November.

http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/73424463/original large 1.5x

One thing I noticed here is that Rima Hase seems to continue into the
double ridge around Petavius, or at least aligns with it. I hadn't
connected them before, they seem to be related though I could be
wrong. Notice how bright the eastern 'headlight' of Stevinus is
compared to the other craters, highlights well and truelly blown I'm
afraid!

Hi All,

This was taken in fairly good seeing on 12th October 2006 03:42UT.

http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/73742676/original

I used a very high gain setting for this (919), so in order to deal
with the noise tried various stack sizes from 200 to 1200. The best
results were at around 1000 which could take more wavelet processing
to bring out the detail while keeping the noise down to reasonable
levels, finished off with a mild dose of Noiseware Community Edition
NR s/w.

Full Moon mosaic : 1st Feb

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Perhaps surprisingly I've never tried a mosaic of the full Moon
before, so here is my first attempt taken on 1st February 21:00 -
21:30UT ( actually around 8.5hrs before full Moon at 5.45UT the next
day, 99.9% illumination).

I couldn't resist doing several versions including some playing around
in Photoshop -

http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/74353500/original
http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/74340634/original large (x2)
http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/74346454/original small
http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/74343986/original negative
http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/74313906/original 'ice'
http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/74313941/original 'obsidian'

I'm not sure I could repeat the vanishing maria trick in the last 2
but it was a balancing of solarized and inverted layers which worked
to cancel out this part of the image. Not that it serves any real
purpose but its something a bit different! :-)

I would have liked to have got higher resolution but I think this is
probably the best I could expect without resorting to a barlow to
increase the focal length from the 1200mm used here. However that
would mean around 4 times the number of avis so maybe I'll just wait
until I have a camera with a larger ccd! I think I can also see some
effects from using a relatively small number of compressed data frames
in an almost static AVI (ie. very little movement due to low
magnification) which has resulted in some patterned noise. I'll
probably use raw data for low magnification images like this in future.

10in f4.8 Newtonian, DMK 21AF04, green filter, Registax v4, PSE 5,
1/700s (gain 300), 300/1500 frames, MAP: 3-5x128, 20 images

Eclipse - penumbral to totality sequence

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Lots of great eclipse photos appearing smile , looks like we were lucky with the weather in the UK for once.

Heres a sequence from 20.52 - 22.49UT 3rd March from just after the beginning of the penumbral phase to just after the beginning of totality and one taken at 23.18UT near maximum eclipse.

More sequences of the rest of the eclipse to come.

Theophilus, Archimedes & the eclipse

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Here is a bit of a mixed bag of images, some old some new -

Sinus Aspertatis & Theophilus 12-Oct-06 02:43-04:26UT
http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/75376830/original
http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/75376881/original large 1.3x
- mosaic of 3 images, 1/60s, 900/4-6000 frames, MAP: 12x128
this is a bit of an odd one - the top right section was taken nearly
two hours before the other two sections (and at maximum gain, the
other two were at 760) and needed rotating to match so the shadow
lengths are a bit mixed up here. Not ideal at all but I
couldn't resist it ;-)

Posidonius, Taurus & Plinius mosaic

Hi all,

Here is an image from my very first imaging session with the DMK. I recently realized that I can use some avis which I had thought would be near useless due to a promo banner at the top from the codec I was using by mistake. I've discovered it can be edited out (thanks to VirtualDub) so now I have around 100 more avis to play with (yes, I was busy that evening of course ;-) some taken in what looks to have been very good seeing.

Last nights Crescent Moon

Posted By Stefan Lammel

Hi all,

Took this last night with my 7" f8 Newtonian. I haven't used it much
since building it but I think I might stick with it for this lunation.

http://www.pbase.com/slammel/image/77453362/original

7 piece mosaic, fl: 1400mm, DMK 21AF04, 1/30s, 500/1000, green filter,
Registax v4, PSE 5, MAP: 27-4x 64x64

Pleased as I am with this image its a poor consolation for the 1.4
day crescent that just escaped me the previous evening. After
searching for it for a couple of hours through the haze I saw it
appear just as I was about to give up with just a few minutes before
is slid below the roofline. Panic stations ensued but I hadn't checked
the alignment of the finder which was way out and it took an age
finding the Moon and focusing. I just managed a tantalizing glimpse of
this beautiful super slim crescent on the screen before it slid out of
view, you can imagine my frustration.

Next time I'll be ready, lesson learnt hopefully. As they say -
failure to prepare is preparation for failure.

Stefan
