How do you feel about the Meade Elliptical flats ?

Posted By Ed Meissler

I bought 16"Starfinder Dob, but recently converted it to a truss. In original form, I couldn't get a good focus. I made sure collimation was accurate, and did everything to reduce vibration. When I converted the scope, I went with a 3.1 M.A sec. The primary performs excellent, so the original sec. mirror was bad. IMHO the 4.0 sec is too big for the 16.

Drive Gears by Aeroquest Machining

Posted By Ed Meissler

Chuck About 10 years ago, I had an Aeroquest drive. The machining was flawless, and the tracking was dead on. I for one would not hesitate to recommend them. They have undoubtly gotten better since then, and their prices are reasonable compared to Mathis or Byers which are also good products. IMHO Aeroquest will give you the most bang for your buck!! Clear Skies!! Eddie

Truss tubes

Posted By Ed Meissler

What size scope are you building? That usually will determine the tube size. the size you are thinking about will probably be OK for a 12.5" scope, and use pipe insulation "Obsession style". The tubes tend to get cold in the winter, and the insulation is a lot easier on the hands!!

Any word from Astrofest?

Posted By Ed Meissler

I was on my way down to Vana's Thurs after work. My buds called me and said not to bother. they had already registered, but I was going to pay at the gate. They reported strong storms were predicted that night, and rain most of the weekend. So, I saved my money, and went back home. They left Sat morning, and told me that only about 100 people were there. Praire Skies the following weekend was reportedly LOTS better. There's always next year!!

Questions about making split blocks

Posted By Ed Meissler

If at all possible, drill through the plywood into the blocks. You're right saying the ply wouldn't hold the screws, but the wood in the blocks should, depending on the wood type. Oak and Maple would hold the screws really tight, but soft woods(pine, cedar), they would pull out, so IMO -- go with hardwoods.

wood protection

Posted By Ed Meissler

The stain color has nothing to do with protecting the wood. If you must stain, use 2 coats of a spar urethane over the stain. Spar urethane has the UV protectors in it. Good Luck!

Starsplitter Where are You?

Starsplitter has been out of business for a while. It's a shame too because they made quality scopes sad

Uh huh. Uh huh.

There is a Dodge - Chrysler dealership here that was in business for 50 years, and got the "letter". This one sold 100 cars a month - VERY profitible. WHY close it??? Lots of people are upset, and the town council are thinking about a lawsuit to keep it open.
