Do you really need to level a DOB

Posted By Ed Fraini

I had it explained to me one time why you did not need to level an EQ, just do a polar alignment and press on. It seemed to make sense at the time. Now I have an alt/azm mount. Does the same hold true? If you do a two star alignment should it matter if the box is level?

polar offset

Posted By Ed Fraini

I know that the North Star “orbits” true north at a constant distance through the course of the year. Is there a way to reference for any particular date what the relative angle may be? It seems if I polar align on the North Star there is a systematic error that should be easy to predict and correct for.

Silicon wax on Teflon pads

Posted By Ed Fraini

I have been reading David Kriege’s book “The Dobsonian Telescope”. In it he makes a pretty strong statement about the virtue of using silicon wax, Car Wax, to enhance the performance of Teflon pads used in a DOB. I am wondering if this is common practice today.

source of teflon pads

Posted By Ed Fraini

I checked scopestuff.com and they are not a supplier. I need a couple of pads about 2.5 in sq, either 3/16 or 1/4 inch thick. Any suggestions on a vendor??

basic question???

Posted By Ed Fraini

with a DOB on an equitorial platform do you get field rotation with time exposure. Which is most typically used on a DOB a DSL or CCD? Seems with a larger DOB you might want to use DSL with a lot of short shots.

Some simple beginner questions

Posted By Ed Fraini

I have a 40d on the way now I need to figure out how to get it connected to my DOB which is on an equitoral platform. Apparently you can buy hardware to connect without an eyepiece, is this called prime focus? Or you can buy hardware to some how connect to an eyepiece.

The question is which is the way to go or do you sometimes go one way or the other. How do you get connected to an eyepiece?

Flats and Bais ???

Posted By Ed Fraini

It is pretty obvious what darks are and why they are needed, but I need some explination about "flats" and "bias". I just got "Image Plus 3" and the tutorials reference using them without much explination.

What is the difference in Adobe Photoshop CS and Adobe Photoshop elements? If you just use ImagePlus what are you giving up?
