Ehh Peter, it's like you already know me!
On my old Audi I've done brakes, shocks, bushings water pump, carburettor, and last but not least, rebuilt the engine. (Think lifting a scope is bad? try an engine! but then again I walk sort of funny after it!)

I saw a magazine a few weeks back, apparently you can get some very good digital backs for medium format, 12 - 15 megapixel as I recall.
I'll see if I can dig it out when I get home.
Big bucks though.. , and hard to know how well they would work for astro stuff, but for your everyday stuff it would be a clean break from film.

This wi-fi setup from carinasoft is interesting, you can use an ipod touch to control it as well.... according to the blurb:
