Observing Locations near San Francisco

Posted By Joseph Edwards

Apologize for putting this in the Beginners Forum, but couldn't figure out where it fit best.

Looks like I'm going to be doing a significant amount of business travel to the San Francisco area. I know there are several astronomy clubs in that area, so I have two quick questions. What are some good public sites for observing? And are there any clubs in particular that you would recommend for a visitor?

Note: I'll be mostly on the south side of San Francisco (Sunnyvale, Cupertino, & San Jose).

Airline Portable Setup

Posted By Joseph Edwards

All,

My new job looks like its going to have a lot of opportunities for travel to the southwest so I'm looking at purchasing either the Orion 80ED or a WO scope as a travel companion to replace my current ST80. My big concern though is getting a stable mount that is also airline friendly. Any suggestions?

CCW,

Any hints for a first timer to IDSSP? We've only been in IL for 2 years, so this will be my first time to this event. Plan on setting the tent up at the observing field since it will just be myself. Any recommendations for location, what to watch out for, etc?

Hesitant to ask, but here goes....

Thanks all. I'm headed out to the Illinois Dark Skys Star Party in a couple weeks. I'll see if I can get a look through someone's binos there.

As an aside, anyone know if there are going to be any vendors at this event that will let me "test drive" a pair of binoviewers in my scope?

Clear Skies,
Joe

Sean,

I've been trying to get the same thing. From the various internet mapping services, I came up with the following (in decimal format)

(+40.007172,-090.167876)

Re: The Church Councils around 200 - 300CE

Bill,

The actual dating of the existing Nag Hammadi manuscripts appears to be 3rd century. Wikipedia actually gives the date as 3rd or 4th century. Although the writings also appear to refer to earlier Greek writings which may date to around the 1st & 2nd centuries, but I don't know that anyone has definitively placed the date of the originals.

On the other hand, various of the canonical books were known to have existed prior to this date. The issue at hand is whether the "debatable" books of the Nag Hammadi were ever truly considered canonical of their own right.

Despite the fallability of our current era websites, a good overview of the canonical authority of the current Bible is available at the following website: http://www.ntcanon.org/authorities.shtml

Burgess Binoviewer

Posted By Joseph Edwards

The Highpoint Scientific website lists the current model as the BV-125 "C" and says that this model has 22 mm of apeture, but notes that since the beamsplitter is also 22 mm, some "clipping" may occur.

Has anyone heard from Bill lately about whether there is indeed a "C" model which does away within the constriction from the internal baffle?

Also noted on the Highpoint website that although the Burgess Binos still use set screws (instead of constricting bands), this supposed "C" model now uses 3 instead of just 1, and they are all nylon.

Looks like some decent improvements if they prove true.

Bill, please tell us if this is the real deal.

YES!!!! I wasn't sure, but I'm glad to get a confirmation. I live in IL near St Louis. I was letting the dog out, and saw a green orange (yes it had orange in it) streak to the SSE. At a guess, I'd say it went through Sagitarius, but east of the "Teapot". Does that match with your observation?
