Pentax DCF 9X63

Posted By Bill Byrd

I just acquired a pair of the above. They seem very nice and should be good for what I will be using them for. I tried to find some references/reviews on the web but came up empty handed. Were these binos only made for a short time or in very small quantities? It's almost eerie that there are so few references to this model. Anyone else have a pair or a link to any info on the web?

Sorry to cross post: No responses on Astro Bino Forum so I thought I'd try to reach more people here.

Vixen/Orion R200SS 8" f/4

Posted By Bill Byrd

I'm considering one for a dedicated RFT scope. I have other scopes for planetary & deep sky observing. Visual use only at this time but maybe some imaging later on down the line. Anybody out there using one who can give me some opinions/tips? I'd use it on a GM-8.
Thanks!

Which UHC Filter??

Posted By Bill Byrd

I think I'll take the plunge and get my first filter. Seems like a UHC would be a good one to start with. Any opinions on where to buy and why?
Thanks!

That's pretty slick, Steve! Do they hold tightly? I wonder why no one else uses this method? Seems very easy and straight forward to do. Good going!

Filter Holder

Posted By Bill Byrd

I recently obtained my first filter, a 2" Astronomik UHC. Using it by screwing and unscrewing got old fast, not to mention that I couldn't use it with my higher power EPs which are all 1.25" barrels. I was thinking of a filter slide and I may still do that if I add other filters to the arsenal. In the mean time, I built this swing type holder with things I had around the shop. I took these pics before the flat black paint goes on (tomorrow) so it would be easy to see how it works. This should make it very easy to view an object and then swing the filter into the light path to see if the filter makes for a better or more detailed view.
I like ATMing almost as much as viewing things.

Hmmm...I posted this in the Equipment Forum but it belongs here just as much. Sorry if I'm wasting too much space Herb.

Beautiful Michael! What kind of stain and finish did you use? I have a nice piece of solid walnut that I have been trying to decide what to use it for. Maybe I should make an EP case.

Blackening Edges of Objective

Posted By Bill Byrd

Okay, we've all heard that this is a good idea. So what does everyone use to do this? I've used "Magic Markers" on smaller lenses. Is this okay for bigger objectives? I worry about outgassing and always let the lenses I blacken with MM sit out overnight before reinstalling. Other options?
Thanks,
