Valentine's nebula

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

I know, I'm a little early, but here is the Valentine's nebula, also called Heart and Soul, between Cassiopeia and Perseus.
12/22/2005 from the Blue Ridge Parkway. Canon 20D at ISO 1600, Canon EF-L 200mm at f/3.2. 14 x 3min 30s = 49 min total.
It's incredible the number of planes that passed in the field of view during that time !!

By the way, I would like to see the same kind of picture with a 20Da or a 20D Hutech. The 20D is not sensitive enough for H-Alpha, I would like to see what the other cameras are capable of before considering buying one. A good difficult subject with red nebulosity would do (Valentine, Orion, Horsehead, Jellyfish, IC 443, Rosette...). Thanks.

Witch Head Nebula

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Same night, 12/22/2005, same place, Blue Ridge Parkway. Same equipment, Canon 20D at ISO 1600 with Canon EF-L 200mm lens at f/3.2. 9 pictures for 31 minutes 30 seconds of exposure.
The nebula is faint but with 200mm it's very easy to frame it.

IC 1396

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Same night, 12/22/2005, same place, Blue Ridge Parway. Waiting for some clouds to move away from the Witch Head, I took IC 1396 before it was too low.
Canon 20D at ISO 1600, with the Canon EF-L 200mm lens at f/3.2. 12 x 3min30sec = 42 minutes total exposure.

What I like about this lens is that it's high quality. None of my 3 pictures posted tonight are cropped. You see the full frame, and the stars at the edges are very nice. The lens is the 200mm EF-L f/2.8, I almost used it fully opened.

Double Cluster

From Charlotte, NC, light polluted sky, 12/27/2005. Canon 20D at ISO 800, Takahashi E160 f/3.3 F=530mm, light pollution filter. Dark frame substracted.
27 x 1 minute = 27 minutes total.

Nothing fancy, the light pollution is limiting the capabilities.

Charlotte Panorama

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Not sure if that can pass for "landscape", but this is a panoramic picture of Charlotte taken on 12/30/2005. I took 7 individual pictures that I stitched together with Pano Tools assembler. It's not the full-size final picture... I used a Canon 20D at ISO 400, tripod, remote cable, and a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens set at f/6.3. Each picture was exposed for 1.3 seconds. I processed the individual pics to have a smooth seamless sky, removed a few stars, removed the global red cast.

Cone Nebula from the NC Blue Ridge Parkway

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

Well, I was 20 feet away from Ivan, same night (01/26)(27F). We have the same camera, a 20D. However, I was using a Takahashi Epsilon 160 on a G-11 mount. I took 9 pictures of 5 minutes each at ISO 1600, processed with Photoshop with my own version of flats. No crop.
I'm like Ivan, I would like to see more reds from H-Alpha one day...

Horsehead from the NC Blue Ridge Parkway

Posted By Jean-Denis Douvier

So, that same night (01/26, 27F), still 20 feet away from Ivan - I forgot, but Dan was 15 feet away in the other direction on the same overlook !
9 pictures of 5 minutes each at ISO 1600 with the Canon 20D, Takahashi Epsilon 160 (f/3.3), Losmandy G-11 manually guided. Processed with Photoshop with the same "flats". No crop. I boosted a little the nebulae.

Canon 20D, Canon EF 200mm L lens at f/3.5, Losmandy G11. 16 x 3 minutes at ISO 1600.

The scorpion was still very low on the horizon, 3 minutes is not enough and I didn't have dark frames. Tough subject.
