Olympus E1 for astrophotography

Posted By Tim Taylor

Hi

Has anyone any experience of using this camera for astrophotography? I haven't found anyone making a t-mount and so can't use it through my refractor. The longest lens I have for it is 400mm equivalent and the shutter can be held open for 8 mins at a time. Is it likely that mounting this on my refractor to get it pointing and tracking that I'll be able to do any useful astrophotography?

Any ideas or shared experiences welcomed.

Seben ED eyepieces

A range of Seben ED 1.25" eyepieces is currently being advertised on eBay. Has anyone any experience of these?

Thanks

Mars attempt through ED 100

Posted By Tim Taylor

Hi all. I had a go at Mars last night with my ED100 refractor (with 3x Barlow + IR block filter) and Toucam Pro camera in reasonable seeing. Whilst I'm sure the processing could be better (and probably focussing), I wonder whether it is possible to get a lot more detail through this aperture? Thanks for looking at my humble offering!

LXD-75 vs CG5-goto dilemma

Posted By Tim Taylor

Hi all. I find myself the owner of both of these mounts, a C8 and an ED100. One of the mounts has to go. The LXD-75 is a bit more compact for storing while set up and a bit lighter. As yet I have no experience of the CG5. Any opinions as to which mount is a better one to keep whould be most welcome.

Thanks!

Recommendation for EPs for C8

Posted By Tim Taylor

I've just bought a C8 (f/10 80" or f/6.3 50.4" with reducer) and wonder what people might recommend for some reasonable quality eyepieces? The only quality accessories I have at present are the TV 2 and 3x Barlows. Otherwise I have a motley selection of standard celestron and orion plossls. I had in mind possibly some of the Burgess range of EPs. What I don't want to do is go and get EPs that are unsuitable either in FOV or power for the C8.

Thanks

C8 first light (Mars)

Posted By Tim Taylor

Seeing was pretty appalling last night and a lot of processing was needed to get even this amount of detail out of my new (to me) C8. Although the processing artefact rather spoils the image, I'm hopeful that when the seeing is good, I'll be able to fine-tune collimation, increase magnification and start getting some nice images...

Just for comparison I've put the Calsky simulation next to my image.

Image processing - web resources

Posted By Tim Taylor

I'm coming to realise that image processing to get all available information out of astro images is a bigger part of this game than I thought. I found an interesting article online regarding the 'unsharp mask' that I thought I would share with you at http://www.ifa.hawaii.edu/%7Ewang/gallery/random_notes/USM.pdf If anyone else has found useful resources like this, I for one would much appreciate the references.

Clear skies to all.

Stacking of DSLR images

Posted By Tim Taylor

I hope soon to be able to start some deep sky shots using an Olympus E1. I've got quite used to using Registax3 for stacking avi images from a ToUcam but would be pleased to have recommendations for stacking DSLR frames. ImagesPlus has been recommended. MaximDL seems very pricey. All ideas welcomed.

Thanks

Webcam imaging for beginners

Posted By Tim Taylor

I thought I'd have a go at putting down in the form of an outline tutorial some of the things I've learned about taking planetary images with webcams. It's pretty basic but might be of use to someone reading this forum. If anyone would like to comment, I'm happy for any input to improve or correct things I've said.

First deep sky image - M42

Posted By Tim Taylor

Hi all. Here's a modest first attempt at M42 taken last night with a new (to me) TMB 80/480 unguided 4 x 30sec with 3 x 20sec for the core. Camera was the Olympus E1 with dark frame subtraction done by the camera on each sub. Stacked and processed in Photoshop CS2. No light pollution filter used, just IR block so some detail was lost extracting the street light glow...

Thanks for looking.
