Cases

Posted By Bennett Burbank

I just bought a C-11 with the CG-5 GT mount. I am planning on getting the Orion soft case for the OTA. What should I use to carry around the mount and tripod? I assume that people break the tripod down and separate the mount. Any advice?

Thank you!

Konigs

Posted By Bennett Burbank

What is a konig? How does it compare with, say, a plossl? I have a friend who swears by his. I have a C-11 and am thinking about getting a larger aperture eyepieces (24mm)and a 2" diagonal. Any advice?

Broadband vs. narrowband

Posted By Bennett Burbank

I live in a highly light-polluted area of South Florida and would like to know which is better for lunar/planetary and some limited deep-sky observing - narrowband or broadband filters. I use a C-11 XLT.

Problems with a Denk standard

Posted By Bennett Burbank

I just got a used Denk standard for my C-11. I am using a 6.3 reducer. I am unable to get a focusable image and there is what looks like a shadow of the secondary that dominates the center of the image. What is going on?

Thanks!

Planetary viewing

Posted By Bennett Burbank

Any suggestions for a good pair of planetary ep's for a Denkmeier standard on a C-11 SCT? I believe that 6mm should bring me about to maximum.

Thank you!

Best single pair

Posted By Bennett Burbank

I just ordered my dual-arm powerswitch. I am using a C-11 XLT and a Denk standard. I'd like to know what people's opinions are - given my setup, what would be the best single pair of ep's to use at .5 / 1.15 / 2x with a 2800mm focal length?

I look forward to your opinions!

Orion Starshoot camera

Posted By Bennett Burbank

Has anyone used / reviewed this inexpensive (and very tempting) camera? I have a C-11 XLT on a CG-5 and want to get my first camera. This one fits nicely into the budget, but I am also considering the SAC 10 for over twice the money. Any thoughts?

Newbie rig

Posted By Bennett Burbank

Help me out here, please - I have a C-11 (still on the CG-5) and a recently-acquired Orion Starshoot camera. I understand that I need a guiding solution, but I don't know whether to go with the inexpensive guidescope and imager or an even less expensive off-axis guider / imager. I read something that indicated that an off-axis guider was preferable in cats to a guidescope for a reason too technical for me to understand without more caffeine.

And what guider should I use? Can a lowly solar-system model like the Orion for $99 do the trick?

Thank you!!

Autoguiding basics

Posted By Bennett Burbank

I have an ED80 on a CG-5. There is an autoguiding port on the mount. How is a camera connected, since it isn't a USB port (RJ-45)? And how can I operate the autoguiding within Maxim DL? I need an autoguiding solution because the mount will not track well for longer than a minute (without drift alignment).

Thanks for any thoughts.

Compromised Meade UWA 4000

Posted By Bennett Burbank

I am devastated - I think I've ruined my precious Meade Series 4000 8.8 UWA. I made the ghastly and idiotic mistake of opening it up, assuming that the elements were secured. Instead they spilled out, and although I put them all back together just as they were there is now a narrow ring of light that surrounds the FOV. Who repairs these things, and is it worth it to seek out such services? Any advice would be appreciated, obviously.
