M42 - Newbie to the digital SLR thing....

Posted By Tom Gwilym

I thought I would post one of my first tries with my new Canon 10D. I just got the camera last week, and here in Seattle we have had amazing weather, but an almost full moon unfortuanetly, so that kind of cuts back on deep sky stuff a little bit. Here is one of my first tries with the 10D camera. It's nothing fancy, but it's a lot better than anything I've done with any of my previous cameras, I'm totally impressed with what this thing can do! smile

If anyone is looking for one, I have my SAC8-II camera for sale in the Classified section of this site.

Comments, suggestions or just pointing and laughing are welcome!

Yeah....another M42. :-)

Not as good as some I've seen on here, but this is my best one yet thanks to my new Canon 10D. I took this last night with the bright moon in the sky lighting up some very hazy (nearly foggy) skies here in the Seattle area. I'm very pleased with how this turned out though!

I still have a good SAC8 camera for sale in the Classified section if anyone is looking for one. I need to offset the cost of my newest toy. wink

My best Jupiter shots so far.

Posted By Tom Gwilym

Ok, this can't compare with some of the great stuff I've seen posted here, but it's the BEST I have taken yet, so I'm very pleased with it. smile

Taken from my backyard obseratory last weekend.

First M101 attempt.

Posted By Tom Gwilym

First clear sky here in Seattle for over a month. I had to go play with my new scope and camrera a bit even though it was a weeknight and I had to work the next day.

Nothing too spectacular, and I really need to take more images to stack, but it was just a single clear night with a crappy forecast after so I just did a quick shot.

Taken with a Canon 10D, Orion 80ED piggyback on a 12" LX200. Autoguided with a Meade DSI on the LX200.

Cloudy skies - time to reprocess old stuff

Posted By Tom Gwilym

I've been suffering with about a month of rain and clouds here in the Seattle area.
So, I used this time to play with some processing of old stuff I collected when it was clear so long ago. This image is made up of about 15 stacked images of M42. I don't have much detail on the exposures, but they are between 1 and 5 minutes since they are a compilation of all my good ones.
This is taken with a Canon 10D, an Orion 80ED, guided by a 12"inch LX200 and Meade DSI.

The color of the nebula always came out kind of blue, so I got the clever idea of swappng the blue and red channels in Photoshop when playing with the RGB frames. That seemed to do the trick. I'm not sure if the colors are correct, but I think it's kind of pretty!

M51 with my working autoguding!

Posted By Tom Gwilym

Yay! I got my autoguiding figured out. I still have a ways to go, but at least I got something holding finally. I'm guiding a 12" LX200 with an Orion 80ED and modified Vesta webcam using Guidedog.
Taken during a 75% full moon also, and somewhat hazy skies.

Fun with Hubble

Posted By Tom Gwilym

I couldn't resist comparing my latest image of M51 with the new image from Hubble. It's my first try at autoguiding, and I can do much better, but it's still kind of fun to see how close things match up! wink

Comet Tempel 1 and galaxy

Posted By Tom Gwilym

I didn't know if this should go in the Deep sky or Solar system imaging, so here it is.
Brief clearing here in Seattle saturday night. So I took a few images. Here is a shot with my Orion 80ED of a tiny Tempel 1 comet (with enlargement)and a distant galaxy that happened to show up in the frame also.
The comet is left of center, and slightly up a bit.
...cloudy again, waiting, waiting, waiting...

Latest Jupiter - storms visible!

Posted By Tom Gwilym

I think I posted this in the wrong forum, so I'll correct myself and put it here where it should be!
This is my latest Jupiter image from Saturday night when there was some brief clearing of the Seattle Nebula and I could see the sky. This is th first time I've been able to resolve some of those white spot storms on the planet. I've been at this for about 4 years, and finally getting something really good, even though this is just the "boring" side of the planet.
The GRS was rotating into view, but the clouds returned before I got a chance to image it. Argh!

Re: A Blue Jupiter

...I had to pick myself up off the floor after seeing that image. Amazing!

I just wish we could get some clear skies here in Seattle again soon before Jupiter gets too low. Arrgghh!!! Stupid thunderstorms!
