Faith and Reason

Posted By Russell Cole

I did a google on Faith vs Reason, and this site popped up. I am still working my way through the volumeous texts. The link and a quick quote from the site:

http://www.iep.utm.edu/relig-ep/

"Very few philosophical positions (and this is an understatement) enjoy the kind of evidential support that classical foundationalism demands of belief in God; yet most of these are treated as rational. No philosophical position—belief in other minds, belief in the external world, the correspondence theory of truth or Quine’s indeterminacy of translation thesis—is properly based on beliefs that are self-evident, evident to the senses, or incorrigible. Indeed, we may question whether there is a single philosophical position that has been so amply justified (or could be). Why is belief in God held to a higher evidential standard than other philosophical beliefs? Some suggest that this demand is simply arbitrary at best or intellectually imperialist at worst."

DVD-HD R.I.P.

Posted By Russell Cole

I purchased the HD-DVD add-on for my XBox-360 and a handful of HD-DVDs early on, so I figured I had paved the way for Blu-Ray.
Sorry, Guys, but it had to be done to settle the format wars. wink

I can't believe it took so long.
I blame Walmart for prolonging it, by coming out in support of HD-DVD just before Christmas (then of course they recently followed the crowd in support of Blu-Ray).

The only question now, is to wait for Microsoft to release a Blu-Ray add-on or just go ahead and get a PS3?

Not So Far-Fetched Sci-Fi

Posted By Russell Cole

I have recently been playing (just completed, and started again), the XBox 360 title, "Mass Effect".
It is far fetched, but about the only way I will get to experience space travel in my lifetime.
I am having a blast! grin

Original sin?

Posted By Russell Cole

Floyd,

The pen is mightier than the sword, eh?

It is not the writings, but extremists that use them to hurt others.

Matthew 7:15
Watch out for false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are voracious wolves. 20 7:16 You will recognize them by their fruit. Grapes are not gathered 21 from thorns or figs from thistles, are they? 22 7:17 In the same way, every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad 23 tree bears bad fruit. 7:18 A good tree is not able to bear bad fruit, nor a bad tree to bear good fruit.

Of course, now we just have to determine what constitutes good fruit.

I can only think that love is the good fruit.

Love God. Love people.

So simple, yet so hard.

The first sin, first human sin, had to be the first person to turn against love. I still vote for Cain.

And yet, Cain was maybe forgiven. God protected him with a mark so that he would not be killed.

Much more tolerance is needed.

Names in the New Testament?

Posted By Russell Cole

Darian,

I think these are English translations of the names. So, yes, actual, but not the same since they did not speak english.

Budget cuts and the Mars rovers

This really seems ridiculous to me and a fine way to treat the folks who overachieved on the rover.

Church

Posted By Russell Cole

My and my wife's parents and grandparents went to a First Baptist Church (FBC) as far back as we remember. We, my wife and I, have kept the tradition. The funny thing is, our parents have not. My dad is now a Methodist. I learned, several years ago, that my grandparents were not always Baptist. I don't really feel tied to the FBC, but it does feel like home. We have attended other churches, and they are nice, but not what we are used to. So we will probably stay at the FBC.

God, like Dark Matter, is difficult to prove or se

Posted By Russell Cole

Floyd,

I like this post. I can understand folks who say they do not know if God exists, but I never understand the view that someone knows God does not exist.

Reading some of the later posts in this thread it seems some do not like to use the term "faith" when it comes to science, but it is not that far removed. Some people, me included see effects on life, that we attribute to God, just as some in science see unproven effects that they attribute to something.

Good post.
