M106

Posted By Eric Houby

I took this one a couple of weeks ago. The framing is poor but I like seeing all of those galaxies.

5 hours L and 1 hour each of RGB for a total of 8 hours.

M51 in L(RHa)GB

Posted By Eric Houby

This project turned out to my biggest to date. I took the 4.5 hours of Ha that I posted on 3/25 and added 3 hours of L and 1.75 hours each of RGB to create this image. This is the first time I've added narrowband data to RGB and chose to average the Ha with the R channel.

12.75 hours of L(RHa)GB with 3sad1.75:4.5):1.75:1.75 hours per channel.

QSI516ws
G11

Comments and suggestions welcomed! How does the color and background sky look on your monitor?

Thanks for looking.

M57

Posted By Eric Houby

It has been quite some time since I've posted any images as I've been working on tuning my G11 to perform better at longer focal lengths. Progress has been very slow due to weather and other responsibilities but I'm getting close. This is a test image I took back in mid June with my old C8 at 1220mm and f/6.1.

Now if I only could have a few more nights of good seeing so that I can finish tuning! :-)

LRGB image with a total of 2.5 hours
RGB each at 20 minutes
and L at 85 minutes

M42 in Ha

Posted By Eric Houby

This M42 is 11 minutes with 30 second subs through a 13nm Ha filter. The telescope is my old C8 at f/6.2 and a QSI516ws ccd. I'm looking forward to the delivery of OIII and SII next week. :-)

Thanks for looking!

IC1805 in Ha

Posted By Eric Houby

Attached is a shot of IC1805 I took with my SV105. Total time is 70 minutes with 10 minute subs through a 13nm Ha filter. Camera is a QSI516ws.

Thanks for looking and suggestions are welcomed!

NGC2174 in narrowband

Posted By Eric Houby

I recently upgraded my QSI516ws with QSI's new integrated OAG and Astronomik narrowband filters to start my narrowband learning process. My first narrowband attempt was NGC1499 but I need much more time with the SII filter and have not had a chance to finish it yet. This image of NGC2174 also needs more SII but is "close enough" to post - I hope you agree. :-)

Telescope: SV105 at f/6.2
Camera: QSI516wsg
Ha: 9x10min
OIII:8x10min
SII:7x10min

Thanks for looking and any comments or suggestions.

After a long spell of mount modifications and very poor weather I finally have an image to share. Attached is a full resolution crop and the full size image can be found here:

More data of this FOV would be good but a mosaic would be fun... I'll have to choose next night I get out. :-)

M97 - AT8IN first light

Posted By Eric Houby

Recently I purchased an AT8IN to see how a fast Newtonian used with narrowband filters would work in my light polluted suburban backyard. The stock focuser was decent but I wanted to have automated focusing using my existing Feather Touch/Micro Touch system. I bought the required adapters from Starlight Instruments and late Friday afternoon I had my Feather Touch mounted on the OTA and ready to go for a clear but windy night. This first light image of M97 is 1 hour for each filter of SII, Ha, and OIII with 10 minute sub exposures. No flats were used and the small amount of vignetting seen in the corners appears to indicate that I have the new focuser well centered.
There are quite a few galaxies in the background, more than I expected for a 3 hour narrowband image. Compared to the M703 I’ve been imaging with for the past year this telescope is fast! It should be a good telescope for me to learn from over the next number of months.

Telescope: AT8IN with MPCC
Camera: QSI516wsg
Image scale: 2.32 as/px
Guide Telescope: Mini Borg 60mm
Guide Camera: Starfish
SII: 6 * 600s
Ha: 6 * 600s
OIII: 6 * 600s

I have fought with the processing of this one for way too long and need to give up for now... I collected LRGB data but was never happy with my color processing so I will post the luminance for now.

Telescope: M703 @ f/7.6
Mount: G11
Camera: QSI516wsg
Image scale: 1.4 as/px
Guide Telescope: Mini Borg 60mm
Guide Camera: Starfish
L: 4.5 hours with 300 min sub exposures
