Winter viewing, bad for my telescope?

Posted By Casey Whalen

This is my first year stargazing. I have a 6" dob and i've noticed the few times i've taken it out this winter that after being outside for a while and then coming back in the house I have a fine mist or a kind of condensation on my scope. I'm mainly conserned about my primary and secondary mirrors. After bringing my dob in the house for a few minutes it disappears. Is this something I need to be concerned about?

Thanks.

Far fetched camera question?

Posted By Casey Whalen

Intersted in trying to take pictures of the universe using my dob (xt6 classic) and a Nikon D70 camera (digital). I've heard of people taking off they're eyepieces and shooting a pictures directly into the telescope. Is this plausible? I'm guessing if it is at all i'm gonna need a tripod or something to hold the camera. Can anyone shed some light on this?

-thanks

Considering purchasing a cassegrain/mak, any sugge

Posted By Casey Whalen

Hello all,

I'm considering about upgrading to a Cassegrain from my xt6 6" dob (orion). I have around a thousand to spend on this. I'd like to be able to use my new laptop to control the telescope (I have Starry Night Pro 6) and also use it for astrophotography. I love my dob but i'd like something bigger with more light gathering capability but don't we all? I'm still fairly new to astronomy but i'm in love with it and have been studying it non-stop since I started. I've seen/heard and read that the Meade ETX series is pretty nice. Any feedback would be appreciated. Would I notice a huge differance between
my 6" dob and say a 8" cassegrian?

Which 2" wide field to use with my new xt12i?

Posted By Casey Whalen

Hello all,

I'm probably going to be purchasing a Intelliscope xt12 and will currently only have enough money for 1 wide-angle 2" eyepiece. I have only been using 1.25" eyepieces and have never bought or used a wide-angle eyepiece. I was wondering if anyone can suggest a great 2" wide-angle ep for a decent price? Any particular brand I should look for? Naglers sound nice but crazy expensive. Also since I can only afford 1 of these ep's what size should I get, somewhere around the 30mm range? Thanks for your time.

Anyone have a xt12i and use starry night with it?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I'm thinking about purchasing a orion xt12i dob. I have starry night pro v6.04 and want to use my laptop in conjunction with my scope. Do I need to purchase the object locator if I want to do this or can I just navigate the scope manually using starry night?

Thanks.

Posted By Casey Whalen

Is it possible to take a 27mm Tele vue Panoptic and use a 2x barlow (standard celestron) without losing quality?
Thanks.

What size filter should I buy?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I'm new to viewing with filters. I'm going to be buying a xt12i and will have the option of using either 2" or 1.25". I plan on getting both Tele Vue 2" 27mm Panoptic and a 1.25" 12mm Radian and I have a set of celestron 1.25 eyepieces (kit) which also came with a bunch of what looks like planatary filters. I just don't know will I be viewing nebula at high or low powered? Also for filters i've heard that the lumicon uhc narrow would be a good starting choice or a thousand oaks brand.

Thanks.

Whats the lowest magnification I should buy?

Posted By Casey Whalen

Still getting my feet wet when it comes to eyepieces.
I plan on buying a Tele Vue 2" 27mm Panoptic and a 12mm Radian. Should I shoot for a nice 40+mm ep as well? I know this is kind of a vague question but feedback would be appreciated thanks a bunch!

Naglers....what does it mean?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I'm curious as to what the various type on the naglers mean? (i.e. type 1-6) Does this mean generation? 6 being the newest version?

Thanks.

General eyepiece selection?

Posted By Casey Whalen

I hate asking this but I have a crucal eyepiece question and I can't make up my mind. I need to buy 3 very nice eyepieces for my xt12i. I currently have a TV 27mm Panoptic and I plan on getting the TV Big Barlow 2" and the panoptic interface (also am in the process of buying a Televue 2" Nebustar Filter) . Can any of you suggest 2 good size eps to fill in the gaps for high to mid magnification? I plan on looking at nebula, planets and star clusters.

Thanks for your advice!
