How to contact Vaughn Parsons of Intermountain Opt

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

I'v been trying to contact Vaughn Parsons at Intermountain Optics as he has promised to sell me a mirror. He originally answered a want ad here on Astromart back in January. After many time lapses of him not getting back in touch with me and not answering emails and calls over a three month period, he said he would mail the test report over a month ago. I have no test report and no mirror. I should probably just move on, but I have passed up three equal mirrors on Astromart since then and it is a good deal. Anyone know how to get in touch with Vaughn; is he still in business? I hope he doesn't treat all his customers this way; I'm glad I haven't sent any money!!!

Thanks,
Eddie Kirkland

Astrosky dob kits?

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

Have any of you constructed a truss dob using one of Astrosky's kits, where he sends you the cut-out wooden parts and you assemble and finish?

Are there other 3 or 4-vane spiders for truss dobs than Destiny?

Dew heater wire managementl

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

I have a few questions about orderly dew heater wire management for a truss dob. I have the Kendrick controller mounted on the mirror box and need to run power to 4-5 heaters (Telrad, eyepiece, finder, secondary, etc.) I'm thinking of running the wire(s) through one of the trusses.

1. How many heaters can I run from one RCA wire using splitters?
2. I've seen people's scopes where they have attached several RCA female outlets to the Telrad box or some other plastic box; anyone have pictures or diagram of such?
3. I have a Destiny 3-vane curved spider with Astrosystems secondary holder and am wondering how to run power to the Astrosystems dew heater; do I tape wires to the top of the spider or use the vanes for conduction? How do I run it through the vanes?

Thanks,
Eddie

CHOOSING THE RIGHT EYEPIECE

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

Until recently I had an 8" f/6 dob. Pentax's were great in that scope. Others that worked well were Meade 24.5 SWA, Nagler 9 T1, Nagler 16 T2. I tried the lower Plossl's and a Nagler 7 T1 and found eye relief to be too tight. In my opinion, once you try EP's with wider FOV's like Pentax's, Nagler's, etc. you won't go back to tiny FOV ep's like plossl's and orthos (at least in hand driven scopes).

Which eyepieces go best with a big dob?

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

Hi Marty,
I also have a 16" f/4.5 and here are the eps I use:
40mm Pentax XL, 27mm Panoptic, 16mm Nagler T2, 9mm Nagler T1, 7mm Pentax XL, and a 5.2mm Pentax XL. All perform great and have good edge correction in my scope. I really like the Pentax's and am thinking of replacing the two Naglers with a 10.5 and 14 Pentax; I also love the 27 Panoptic.

DOB Size Queston

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

I'm 5'6" and have a 16" f/4.5 truss dob by Midnightelescopes, an Tectron (Tom Clark) look-alike. Near zenith, I have to use a two step stoul, but most of my viewing is from the ground or the first step.

Grab & Go for Planets under 1K?

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

Until recently, I owned a 6" Intes Mak-Cass. While it was "grab-and-go" enough for me, the cool down problem led me to move to something else. When properly cooled down, it was a great performer on planets and bright DSO's; but when temps are rapidly falling as in winter, the scope took 2-3 hrs. to get really good views. However, in moderate temps, the scope worked fine within 30-45 minutes.

So, I went from a 6" Mak-Cass on a CG5 mount to a Televue TV102 on a Telepod/Bogen tripod combo (which I know is more than the $1K limit). I have previously owned 4.7" f/8.6 and 4" f/5 refractors, both of which had too much color on bright objects for my eyes. Both of these were ok for bright DSO's.

Taurus firearms? good, adequete, or poor?

Posted By Eddie Kirkland

I own a Taurus PT99 (or is it 92?; been a long time since I've had it out). Anyway its the 9mm Berretta look-alike, made in the Brazilian factory with Berretta molds, etc. that Berretta sold to Taurus; they are nearly identical except for the safety, IIRC. Mine is about 15 years old and I like it alot. I've had no trouble with it and its fairly accurate. A friend of mine also has one and he still enjoys his.
