Ocean Beach Skyscape

Posted By Richard Ferrieri

This was my first attempt at skyscape photography. Location was Ocean Beach, Fire Island, NY. I scoped out this rock jetty during the day, and low tide was on my side last night. This beach is typically a fairly dark site, but unfortunately the moon was up. Picture was made by merging two 20 sec exposures shot at 1600 iso using PE12 and Neat Image to remove some noise. No dark frame corrections made. StarSpike software was used to add a little artistic rendering. My focus was on the rock jetty so stars were a bit bloated because of the small DOF. Equipment: Olympus E-30 and 14-54 mm Zuiko lens at 14 mm and f2.8. Surprisingly, I was able to pick up a bit of the Milky Way in the moon glow.

Double Cluster

Posted By Richard Ferrieri

Shot this last night from the backyard using my Olympus e-30 at iso 500, coupled to a hexanon 200mm lens at f4 with red enhancing filter. This was a stack of three 4 minute exposures using iOptron Skytracker. Neat Image used for noise reduction, PE12 for some post processing and Star Spikes software for added artistic rendering.

M45 Plaeides

Just shot this from my backyard. Stacked three 8 min exposures using DSS with onboard camera dark frame correction on each exposure. Used my Olympus E-30 equipped with a Hexanon 200mm f4 lens (plus red intensifier filter) at iso 400. The setup was mounted on an iOptron Sky Tracker. I spent some time getting the polar alignment spot on, but frankly was shocked that I was able to do 8 minute exposures at this focal length.

M37

M37 open star cluster in Auriga. Stacked 6 one minute exposures with dark frame correction at iso 400 using my E-30 equipped with a Hexanon 200mm prime lens and mounted on my iOptron Sky Tracker. Used DSS for stacking, then Astronomy Tools plugin in PE 12 for post processing. This cluster is one of my favorites having almost globular-like quality. There is an interesting filter in Astronomy Tools that renders almost a 3D look about it. This cluster's signature is the amber colored star at its core - some claim to see more red coloration.

Check out this site for KineOptics helical Crayford focuser.
I've been extremely pleased with its performance.

Planetary Templates

Posted By Richard Ferrieri

I am thoroughly enjoying the thread on planetary rendering and am encouraged to try my hand at it. Carlos, you have offered to make available your templates. If it is not too much trouble I would really appreciate copies of your templates to get me going. Thanks.

We could use some images for the gallery

This little guy doesn't realize winter is coming. He has a burrow outside my office building. Shot using a vintage Jaegers 3" f/5 scope coupled with a GSO barlow adapted to an Olympus E-30 DSLR set on a monopod. Exposure set to 1/300 sec at iso 400 and manual focusing. Photo incorporated into Topaz B/W Effects for tonal and detail adjustments and some of the color was brought back in for enhancement.

I really like the shot. What widefield lens did you use? I couldn't get out myself.

Awesome shot Charles! I see you stack more at shorter exposures and super high iso. Do you find that works best for you in your backyard than bumping the exposure up? rich
