THE GOP-Created Debt Ceiling Crisis

Posted By Chris Pagan

In theory if the current budget matched revenue (taxes collected) there would be no need to borrow money assuming debt service is included in budget and no need to raise debt ceiling.

I own a business and have gone to a bank to borrow working capitol.  The first question is "What do you need the money for?"  The second question is "How do you plan on paying it back?"
If I answered the second question "I'll just borrow some more money"  I would be shown the door and not get the loan. The bankers are smart enough to know that I probably won't be in business with that attitude.  This is how our government operates and it needs to change.

Personally if I were in McCarthy's shoes I would use the debt ceiling vote to at least get some accountability for future spending and "get something in writing" that shows a commitment towards a balanced budget.

I understand the possible ramifications of possible default but the spending issue is as important.  How I see it if he capitulates the gap between revenue and sending will get much worse (no matter who is in the Whit House).  Sometimes you need to get burned to gain respect for fire.

For the record I was upset at the spending under Trump.

I would simply tell the vendor that before I took over control of the purse strings there was a loose cannon that overspent and they would have to wait and by the way here is my plan to make you whole.  Of course they would be upset but the amount of money we are talking they can wait. The alternative is for me to pay you today and I go out of business and you never get another dime.

The vendor and I would be better off in the long run

Can the NAACP get any more absurd than this?

The ironic part is NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson lives in Florida.  How long before he moves out of concern for his safety?

Common Ground

I have been a continuous member of AM since 2007 and have made a dozens posts here.  I tend to stay away from the name calling and character assassination.  In light of the latest post from Jim Moscheck (which I am deeply sorry to hear) I thought I would try and change the tone a little.  Instead of trying to beat each other up about who's guy is better, why don't we discuss the issues and hopefully find some we can agree on.

I would hope that the discussion could come from personal opinion and experience instead of throwing links at each other as well as leave the candidates and their position out.

I think one topic we may find common ground on is weather or not to allow those who cross the border should be allowed to vote in a federal election.  I would like to hear your opinion.

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for chiming in.  I'm not completely clear on the criteria for federal elections but some local elections in municipalities do allow for undocumented members of the community to vote.   I would not agree with that in my municipality  (NOT allowed here)  and would not agree that a non citizen should participate in a federal election.  In Florida we have to show photo ID at polling place and provide a signature on an electronic device that compares with one on file.

Hi Rod,

I appreciate that you have invested  time in some research, are we to assume that you are against allowing people crossing the border (non citizens) the right to vote in federal elections?

Hi James,

I picked this topic because there was legislation (I'm not as good ad Rod with the links) that was drafted that would specifically not allow non citizens to vote in federal elections and there were people from both parties that rejected it.  Of all the hot bed issues, abortion, gun control, etc. I figured allowing (or not allowing as the bill was written) non citizens the right to vote could have a consensus on this forum.

They are voting on the SAVE act (Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act) and I would like like to hear an argument as to why to vote against this as many democrats are.  There are many places that voter registration is tied to motor vehicle registrations and there is a box to check as to whether you are a citizen without having to provide evidence.  This opens up the box for non citizens to vote.  I can think of only one reason for this but I don't think any one here would be rooting for election fraud.

In light of recent developments I would think you have reason to suspect the validity of your fact checking sources.  If it were to be determined that the scenario exists for non citizens to check a box without proving citizenship be allowed to vote in federal election, would you be for preventing that?

So why not just vote for the bill to make sure? Or is there a reason not to?
