Light in the tube, contrast, ?

Posted By Warren Boyles

Ron,
By all means get a light shield on the front of your dob. Gary Seronik wrote an article in the April 2001 issue of Sky and Telescope titled Newtonion Baffling Made Easy which describes in order of effectiveness the modifications which enhance contrast in Newts. It's a worthwhile read.

Do dark skies REALLY matter?

Posted By Warren Boyles

You bet they do Alex. Every time we get what promises to be a clear night, I try to get to a nearby state park where I've found much darker skies than in my suburban location and it really makes observing much more rewarding.

Clear day!

Actually Floyd, Hawaii, though warm in the winter months, wouldn't be all that great. I lived in Honolulu from October 1973 to March 1974 and I was really suprised at how windy it was. Those trade winds are really strong. Unless you used a dedicated observatory, your views would be rather shakey.

Be careful while viewing ....

I have a piece of yellow posterboard with "STARGAZING" printed on it and place it on my windshield before I set up.

What to do in Florida?

Posted By Warren Boyles

How about a visit to the Chiefland Astronomy Village outside Chiefland, Florida. I don't know how far it is from Orlando, but I think it certainly would be no more than a day's drive, if that.

zero-power finders

Posted By Warren Boyles

Russell,
I also use the Rigel Quickfinder on my 8" dob along with an Orion 9x50 right angle correct image finderscope. The only problem with the Quickfinder is, as has already been mentioned, parallax shift. Sometimes it actually takes me a few seconds to find the red circles. No real big problem, but just thought I'd mention it. Here on Astromart you can usually find someone selling one.

8" DSH on the way! Starting accessory must have li

Posted By Warren Boyles

Here's what I use with my Orion XT8 which is one of the older models made by Guan Sheng Optical who also makes the Hardin DSH's.
1. An Orion Collimating Eyepiece.
2. Rigel Quickfinder unit power reflex finder.
3. Orion Shorty Plus Barlow.
4. Orion 9x50 right angle correct image finderscope.
5. I have for eyepieces an Orion 25mm Plossl; Orion 12.5mm Plossl; Siebert Standard 10mm eyepiece; 6mm, 9mm, 15mm and 20mm Synta Widefield (66 degree afov) eyepieces and finally a 32mm Plossl.
I would highly recommend the combination of the Rigel Quickfinder and a 50mm right angle correct image finderscope for starhopping.

Clear skies,

What to choose for an eyeglass wearer?

Posted By Warren Boyles

Peter,

Orion has their new Stratus eyepieces having 20mm of eye relief with a 68 degree AFoV and costing $119 each. I don't thing you'll be able to get them until sometime this spring though.

Meade Lightbridge 16" dob.

Posted By Warren Boyles

Alvaro,
Don't know if you are aware of it, but there is a Yahoo Group for Lightbridge telescopes which would probably have alot of good info on this scope. I joined the group a while back when I was thinking of buying a 12" Lightbridge, but I haven't yet bought one.
