I need a mount!

Posted By brian crane

I need a mount that will handle a 6" mak with a dovetail already attached. Would like something I could easily leave set up and drag outside quickly. The catch is I don't want to spend a lot of money. Any ideas on a good set up in the $300- $400 range? Goto would be nice but not a requirement.

Thanks
Brian

New Expanse eyepiece - first impression

Posted By brian crane

Paul,
Thanks for the report. I was considering buying a pair of these for my binoviewer. I've had a few eps with blackout problems and to me nothing is more anoying. You just saved me $100 bucks.

So, What's an APO like?

Posted By brian crane

I think before I sold the farm to get a good apo, I'd invest $50 in a minus violet filter. Sirius optics MV-1 or MV-20. Call Al and ask what he'd suggest. At least on my smaller C-102 the MV-20 worked wonders.

GTO Proxima 31mm Eyepiece

Posted By brian crane

Luis,
I too have owned one of these eyepieces and they perform very well, sharp accross the entire field in my 8" lx200. What I didn't like and finally made me sell it was the constant blackouts/kidney bean effect. I found it to be very picky about eye position and ended up purchasing an Apogee widescan 32mm that I have been very happy with, except for the somewhat soft edges.

Which UHC Filter??

Posted By brian crane

Bill,
I just purchased the Orion ultra-block and don't really care for it. It turns everything a little greenish. However, this may be the case with Lumicon and others also.

Celestron vs. Meade SCT's... your opinions?

Posted By brian crane

James,
I asked the same question a few months ago. Never did I see anywhere that the Meade optics are better than Celestron. Got a lot of "just as good" answers but never anyone that said better, so I bought a used NS11 and love it. I already owned an 8" LX200 classic which I think has very good optics but the NS11 blows it away, of course aperature might have something to do with it. Celestron has the starbright coatings and the new Meades have the UHTC, for an extra charge. I think the jury is still out on the durability of UHTC. You'd probably be happy with either. I've seen both on AM at some pretty reasonable prices lately. Check out the review on cloudynights comparing an N11 and 12" LX200 classic.

Cheap Binos

Posted By brian crane

Tom,
Thanks for the heads up. I've been thinking of getting a pair of 20X80's, but this would definitely be cheaper. Please make sure to report back and let us know if they are any good.

Jeff,
I purchased a pair of rings for my 102 from scopestuff that work great. I believe they are 4" rings.
