Blatant gushing forgive me

Posted By Ron Scarboro

I took the plunge and ordered a 60mm/10mm Solarmax which I received on Wednesday. I then got the unpleasant surprise that an adapter could take up to 8 weeks. However, thanks to Nicholas at Coronado for (a) putting up with a million questions and (b) enduring a bunch of phone calls regarding measurements and (c) sending me an adapter same day as order from stock overnight.

Today I spent about 3 hours in awe of the sun. Rarely am I amazed, but WOW! Mounted on a WO FLT110 the views through the eyepiece looks like the pictures you see on their website.

My wife (who hasn't really ever enjoyed astronomy) spent at least an hour behind the eyepiece.

Amazingly expensive (for me), but worth every penny.

I know it is the American way, but....

As a guy who has been on the wait list since before I could legally vote (not really, but a very long time none the less) for a 130EDFS and a 10" MAK from AP I hate to see them auctioned off unused.

Roland, just change your prices to market rate (obviously $20K+ for the 10" MAK shocked ) and keep the profit yourself. Then minus the speculators, maybe the list will get down to those who really covet the instruments.

That's why I didn't get anything. His sled was full and budget blown on you.

Celestron Binoviewer - Question

Posted By Ron Scarboro

Should I be able to see the edge of the prism when looking in the bottom of the binoviewer?

I believe the area gets noticeably darker in that area when viewing during the day.

Notification List Follow-up Question

Posted By Ron Scarboro

I have no idea, however, I've been on the list since March 2000. I didn't get a good feeling about getting it anytime soon from AP (called to change my address). I think I heard that the Spring run would get the remaining waiters from 1999.

From that you can conclude at least 2 years.

$600 premium for a non-flourite scope.

I'll still pass.

AP 155 as a guidescope?

I officially hate you ;-)

Nice rig, I now have a new level of envy.

What is Starbright and what is my diagonal?

Posted By Ron Scarboro

Celestron doesn't quote their reflectance. Their corporate line is that Meade's UHTC is "just catching up". Who knows though.

As for your diagonal...if it is Celestron, then it is most likely the weakest point in your system. Some are decent, some are bad and some are very bad. I'd invest in a Televue (doesn't have to be Everbright), Astro-Physics (if you're rich) or Lumicon (if you're not).

G9.25 2" diagonal questions

Posted By Ron Scarboro

As far as light to the diagonal, you're right (I think). Certainly a 1.25" Eyepiece will not be any brighter with a 2" diagonal vs a 1.25" diagonal.

The only reason to get a 2" diagonal is access to excellent 2" eyepieces. The field stop of a 1.25" eyepiece is 26mm and that only allows 32mm eyepiece to be 50deg AFOV. A 2" diagonal however allows a 35mm Nagler to get 88deg AFOV. That allows 4 times the amount of sky to be seen with approximately the same magnification.

Nexstar GPS 8 for $1999

Posted By Ron Scarboro

There was just a management buy-out. I'm guessing they need to reduce inventories and increase their cash position in the short-term.

Inventories are probably high now anyway with all the speculation.

Sucks if you just bought one though. I'd be strangling my dealer about now if I had.

I keep hoping they're trying to make price room for a Nexstar 9.25GPS, but I think it is just wishful thinking.
