Ad in a local Newsletter

Posted By Paul Maxson

There is an ad in our local newsletter for a Starspliter 12.5" Dob with Enhanced Nova optics. Says they paid $2500 five years ago and are selling it for $1000 now. The picture looks like it was well taken care of. I'm not interested in buying, nor will I go inspect it... but to the Dob experts here, does this sound like a good deal?

The Sun and Mercury (moving outward) September 1

Posted By Paul Maxson

I finally got the planet Mercury this morning. I waited until it was well up in the sky, but as one might expect, I fought clouds too. I got the image at prime focus on the C925. I wanted to go for Venus, but it was covered by clouds...the earth type. Anyway, here is my first Mercury and the three major sunspot groups visible today.

Solar images for September 11, 2004

Here are my images from this morning. The morning started out cloudy, but cleared by 8:30am local time. I think AR 667 will be visible one more day, but 672 seems to be growing.

Solar images from September 12, 2004.

Either my focusing wasn't all that good, or I overestimated seeing when I looked at these visually, but they are not a crisp as I thought they would turn out. None-the-less, it is my exit image of AR667. AR672 should be present when I can image again starting Thursday.

Has anyone experimented with flatframes with solar images? Any thoughts?

Hi all!!

Here are three images of the sun from today. First we have AR 672 which is large, but breaking up it looks like. Then there is a new, yet not numbered, group emerging. I am guessing it will be numbered AR 673, subject to correction if necessary. Finally I made a partial mosiac of the sun showing the two groups. Seeing was decent but not fabulous.

Solar images from Sept 17, 2004.

Hi all,

Here are my solar images from Sept 17, 2004. AR 672 has really gotten un-organized and is almost gone. AR 673 is doing nicely. I experimented with adding some gain to my exposures, about 25-30%. I'm not sure if the results show more detail or not. I plan to continue to experiment.

AR 673 from September 18, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

I was only able to capture AR 673 this morning through the clouds that are getting thicker. We are expecting rain by the evening. I got about a 3 minute clear window, just long enough for this image.
