AR 673 from September 19, 2004

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

The sky cleared just long enough for me to get two images of AR 673. Considering the clouds and rain we had, I'm quite happy with the result. I'm not sure what the linear feature is across the top of the spot, but it showed up in both images. We are entering the "dry and clear" part of our year, so hopefully the image quality could improve.

Web Cam sensitivity

Posted By Paul Maxson

Does anyone know if the Toucam's lose "sensitivity" over time. By that, I mean last night when I was trying to image the moon, I had the 9.25" at F/20 and not only did I have to set exposure to 1/25 sec, but brightness to about 80% or so. I don't remember having to do this 6 months ago. I was imaging along the terminator, but even when I moved a little more into the "moonlight", the image seemed a bit dim. I was using a NIR filter, but nothing else. I have another Toucam 740 new in the box and was thinking of trying it out as a test. I was just wondering if anyone has seen anything like that. I've had the webcam since June 2003 and have used it quite a bit, lately for solar imaging.

Thanks!!

AR 673 from September 23, 2004 (Solar image)

Hi all,

Here is a link to the sunspot group AR 673 from this morning. Note that I have graduated to a new, larger APO. I am now using an Orion ED100. The images look every bit as good as the ED80, but 56% more area and 20mm more aperature.

Hi all,

Here are links to a couple of sunspots that are on the solar face now. First is AR673, who has been giving a good show for the past few days. Second is a new group that is just coming onto the solar face, AR674.

Seeing was not very good this morning, even visually the groups were not particularily crisp. Still, there is enough detail to be of use.

Hi all,

I shot these yesterday morning but didn't process them until today. Looks like AR673 is history and 674 is nice but not going to get huge.

Note that they were shot at different focal ratios, seeing was changing pretty fast Sunday morning.

Hi all,

It seems that what had been labeled AR 674 for a few days got renamed AR 675 recently. It's not a big spot, but I managed to capture it this hectic morning. I got 676 as well, but it turned out poorly. Due to a doctor appointment I had to shoot a little earlier than I should.

Saturn, Venus and the Sun with an Orion ED100.

Posted By Paul Maxson

Hi all,

I have come to the conclusion that the 9.25" has some sort of optical flaw. I decided to image Saturn this morning and all I could get in the webcam was a "doubled" image. So, I brought out the ED100 and tried and Saturn was crisp and sharp. So, I imaged Saturn at F/31 with the 100mm. I think it turned out very nice for the size of the scope. I then imaged Venus at F/50 and heck...it's sharper than images I shot with the C8 and 9.25. I finally shot images of AR 675 and 676 on the Sun. It will be interesting to see what Celestron wants to check out the system.

Celestron tech support

Posted By Paul Maxson

Has anyone heard lately how Celestron's tech support for repairing scopes is? I know they moved their operation to new quarters about the first of the year. It should be up and more efficient now, right?

Thanks!!
