RejoicePosted By James Brown |
Today is Gaudete Sunday in the Catholic tradition.Gaudete means "rejoice."
By happy circumstance, today is also Ludwig van Beethoven's birthday.
At Mass this morning we sang "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee" obviously this song fits the theme of "rejoice," but also this selection marks tribute to the great composer's birthday. The melody is from the 4th movement of Beethoven's 9th symphony, you would all recognize the tune as the "Ode to Joy" The lyrics we sang were adapted to this immortal melody in 1911 by Henry van Dyke. His poem is a simple statement of universal Christianity. There is no "my Church is better than your Church" nonsense to be found here. To sing these words paired with perhaps the most inspirational melody ever written...well, I'm not much of a singer, but it was a beautiful and moving experience.
The actual Ode to Joy chorus which is such a central part of the 9th symphony was adapted by Beethoven from the poetry of Friedrich Von Schiller. Von Schiller's poetry is a hymn to God in the most Universal sense. His are inspired words which I think all amateur astronomers can appreciate. Spirituality is not limited to organized religion. Both versions are included below. Rejoice!

[COLOR="Blue"]Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee,
Opening to their sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness,
Drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, Fill us with the light of day.
All Thy works with joy surround Thee,
Earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, Center of unbroken praise:
Field and forest, vale and mountain,
Blooming meadow, flashing sea,
Chanting bird and flowing fountain, Call us to rejoice in Thee.
Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blest,
Well-spring of the joy of living,
Ocean-depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother,
All who live in love are Thine:
Teach us how to love each other, Lift us to the Joy Divine.
Mortals join the mighty chorus, which the morning stars began;
Father-love is reigning o'er us,
Brother-love binds man to man.
Ever singing marching onward, Victors in the midst of strife;
Joyful music lifts us sunward In the triumph song of life.

Muss ein lieber Vater wohnen.
Ihr stürzt nieder, Millionen?
Ahnest du den Schöpfer, Welt?
Such'ihn über'm Sternenzelt!
Über Sternen muss er wohnen."
"Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.
Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.
Be embraced, Millions!
This kiss for all the world!
Brothers!, above the starry canopy
A loving father must dwell.
Can you sense the Creator, world?
Seek him above the starry canopy.
Above the stars He must dwell.
