p.s. I ought to cut to the chase. I'm not sure when humanity begins, but I
personally consider myself pro-life. I would counsel a daughter against an abortion in favor of adoption, if I had a daughter in need.
I also respect those people who see things differently and I respect women or couples who choose to terminate a pregnancy. So I would consider myself to be pro-choice
politically. With limits of course. A hard stop on abortions after the first trimester would be fine with me, except to save the life of the mother. This is complicated, but I imagine a lot of 50-60 year old men feel as I do. I don't think about these issues much.
But, if humanity begins at conception, and IVF sometimes involves a choice to terminate a fertilized egg, before or after implantation, then this is an issue. According to my churches' doctrine, as I understand it, terminating after conception is the same as murder. Yet I see IVF is a blessing of modern science. I think it is a wonderful and beneficial thing.
So, I am forced to admit that I do not agree with my Church, even though I tell myself I'm personally pro-life. It does not matter whether one or many fertilized embryos are involved. Alfredo has raised a compelling moral problem for those who would argue that humanity begins at conception.
