Biden Elected, DOW Soars!

Of course he wasn't trolling, but your need to make excuses for these fools will never end.

Right - you expect us to believe that a savvy investor like Russ doesn't know why the Dow futures jumped from +300 to +1600 right before the opening bell.  Good one.  I don't think you'd recognize a good and funny troll if it...  if it... Well, let's just say "never."  I guess it is hard to get the joke sometimes when you are the target.

By the way, Russ authorized me to post a PM from this morning, see attached.  So, friends, in view of Russ's PM, will Rich:

A.  Acknowledge the obvious fact that Russ was harmlessly trolling the forum this morning, or
B.  Double down and accuse Russ of "making up this bogus trolling admission" to save face, after I threw Russ a lifeline, or
C.  Double down and accuse me and Russ of colluding to conceal the fact that Russ really is that stupid and did not know why the DOW skyrocketed this morning, or
D.  Double down and (fill in the blank).

I know which option I'd choose based upon years of dealing with Mr. Davis.  Curious what you all think though!

It is interesting that Rich's inability to acknowledge he misread the intent and purpose of Russ's initial troll is similar, in a small and local way, to his approach to  the outcome of this election.  No surprises there.

This is great news.  I hope there are more Ds like Manchin in the Senate.  I still want to win Georgia!

Hi Maurice - Russ:

Both you guys know more about the interconnections between the markets and the value of the dollar than I do.  I don't study these things like Russ and maybe Maurice.  I am an "index fund and hold" investor.

According to one chap, I am much more of a current events guru... wink

I do find the market gyrations fascinating - even if I don't understand them.  Some things are predictable, but not accessible to us mere mortals, like the profit taking from 1-2 pm Eastern yesterday that shaved quite a bit off of the big run-up in the DOW.  Other things are very mysterious to me.  Like why are investors "rotating" out of tech right now, boosting the DOW and dropping NASDAQ?

This is somehow connected to the vaccine news, and maybe a little bit to the Biden news too, but I don't see why.  It is not like Microsoft is going to be hurt by a hopeful end to the pandemic, but they are getting crushed today.  I can see why Zoom might go down, but why the rest of the tech sector?

Hi Marshal:

Yes, I think they would be skeptical.  The severability issue does not seem that close of a call to me.  The standing issue is always a big deal too, and an excellent way for the Court to refrain from activism.

"Justice Amy Coney Barrett, Trump’s most recent appointee, asked skeptical questions about legal standing. Democrats, ahead of Barrett’s Senate confirmation last month, focused their opposition to her appointment on the Obamacare case, fearing she would vote to strike down the law. Her questions did not indicate she would."

Seriously?  I guess so in a 50/50 split.  That would be reassuring.

Jim

p.s. but Harris breaks ties - do you have a link to the actual rules for selecting the Senate majority leader?

Blue America - the engine of growth

Blue America is up to 70% of the economy and dominates in the growth drivers of the future.

So political numbers.... plus economic power.  What’s left for the GOP ?

Unless the GOP can reinvent itself in time will it much more than just a perennial future opposition party...  ?
Hi Alfredo:

I've heard this sort of thing in just about every second election since forever.  It alternates with equally incorrect opinions about the demise of the Democrats when they get their ass handed to them.  Obama's first midterm and 2016 for example.  The GOP is likely to flip the house in 2022 and will win the presidency in 2024 or 2028.  The house will flip a couple of times in between.  That is the way it goes.  Any imbalance in power is self correcting.  The demise of the GOP due to demographics has been predicted by otherwise sober scholars since the 1960s.

The Brookings blog post misses the complexity of the economy.  Large corporations are headquartered in large blue cities.  No surprise there.  I doubt however, that the large corporations in large blue cites would be all that big of a contributor to the GDP without food, raw materials and markets.
