collimating

Posted By john raymond

William
I've collimated several SCT's for local club members. It can be frustrating. The artificial star will be a big help. Look into Bob's Knobs also.
The last time I did this was at the Science Museum. There are spotlights on the rotunda ceiling with a pebbled surface like a compound eye. Each pebble cast a point of light, which was my "artificial star"
"StarWare" by Phil Harrington has a section on collimation. May be helpful.
Good luck

I can't wait until winter.

Posted By john raymond

I like winter too. It's just too hot.

I remember University advertising the 24 and 32 Konigs 1.25", the 32mm 2" Konig, and the 25mm and 40mm MK-70.

Obsession 18" f/4.2 UC Question

Posted By john raymond

I had an Obsession 18" UC. The only good thing about it was the mirror, and that was from OMI

The truss poles were the wrong length and the mirror sling was too short, so the sling kept falling off. Has some other issues too, for $7000 new scope. I didn't know any better at the time.

If I had bought a classic I might feel differently..

My criteria for a new dob is the vendor tests the complete functions of the scope at night under the stars before delivery. Also the eyepiece height must allow seated observing at zenith, unless it's 27" mirror or larger.

90mm Guide Rings and Finderscope Rings-RED

ADM can probably (?) have their rings custom anodized. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Moonlite sells colorful focusers. Maybe they can help????

UO 1986 55mm Plossl 5 element Ocular!

Posted By john raymond

Steve
It's likely No one really knows.

This is a pretty obscure eyepiece from a long time ago. With all the "Plossls" and Masuyama clones / derivatives available under different brands at the time, it's no surprise you have a mystery. On top of that the importers like Meade/ Celestron/ UO changed suppliers , or their Japanese supplier changed manufacturers, a lot, without documentation or disclosure.

And they never advertised or made public the origin anyway.

Without a factory stamp like "Circle T" or "Circle V" or the mysterious Televue "NJ", who knows?
