Advice needed: Afocal vs Eyepiece Projection

Posted By Joplin Motisher-Chittenden

Most of the images posted on these forums that were taken with the digital rebel were done at prime focus rather than with eyepiece projection. With a C9.25, the Digital rebel will yield a 33 arcminute by 22 arcminute field, which is pretty small. Depending on how you have the tele-extender set up, you are probably using at least 3 or 4 times that magnification, which will make the image impossible to focus through the viewfinder. I would just attach the Digital rebel the same way you would attach a 35mm SLR, it may even be a good idea to try a .63x reducer if you have one. The pixel sixe of the Digital Rebel is pretty tiny and will probably record about as much detail as you can get without any additional magnification.

18mm Scopetronix camera adapter and Orion ED80!?

Posted By Joplin Motisher-Chittenden

I would just get an recessed 1.25" to 2" adapter for it. They are sold by a couple of different places including Russell Optics & Machine. Then you can just leave the adapter on the eyepiece.

Info on Tak t-mount adapters

Ricoh used the same mount as Pentax, so any t-mount designed for Pentax K should work. Which Ricoh camera do you have ?

Pre-Fab Dob Mount??

They may be a bit more expensive than what you are looking for but check out this Astromart sponsor: http://www.e2scopes.com/eight.html
It looks like they make some nice mounts.

Tony Ennis' 8" f/8 Scope

Posted By Joplin Motisher-Chittenden

I'm very impressed with it as well. I was really taken with the way it looks and talking with Tony on the phone sealed the deal. I drove 500 miles round trip to his place the next day to pick it up. I'm going to use it tonight, hopefully the weather will stay clear for the Jupiter triple shodow transit. Tony, if you are reading this I know it was a really good deal.

4" Refractor or 5" Mak?

Posted By Joplin Motisher-Chittenden

I would go for the Mak since it will outperform an inexpensive 120mm achromat on the planets. Despite all the claims of reduced color views with minus violet filters, etc. an achromat that size won't match the Mak in planetary performance. Since you already have widefield covered you won't have to worry much about the long focal length of the Mak. It would also be easier on an alt azimuth mount like the Unistar (less of a lever arm and less adjusting to different eyepiece positions).

Mac Software for Webcams

Posted By Joplin Motisher-Chittenden

Hi Robert,

I use Keith's image stacker to process my webcam images. It isn't as versatile as Registax but the latest version is much improved and relatively easy to use.

For capturing the .mov files I use BTV Pro which is an excellent webcam capture software that will work with just about any webcam or digital video source. The non pro version will also work, it just isn't quite as versatile.

Here is an image I produced with my C9.25, ToUcam, and Mac a couple months ago. If I remember correctly, it was about 100 frames that I averaged.

Cutting a large hole from a thin wall 12" od Tube

Posted By Joplin Motisher-Chittenden

I would consider using a rotozip or similar spiral saw with a metal cutting bit or a dremel tool with the appropriate bit. Any kind of reciprocating saw is likely to distort and catch on the thin aluminum, even if you use a fine tooth blade.
