Whoops - computers giving Bush extra votes in Ohio

Posted By Paul Kammueller

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- An error with an electronic voting system gave President Bush 3,893 extra votes in suburban Columbus, elections officials said.

Franklin County's unofficial results had Bush receiving 4,258 votes to Democrat John Kerry's 260 votes in a precinct in Gahanna. Records show only 638 voters cast ballots in that precinct.

Bush actually received 365 votes in the precinct, Matthew Damschroder, director of the Franklin County Board of Elections, told The Columbus Dispatch.

State and county election officials did not immediately respond to requests by The Associated Press for more details about the voting system and its vendor, and whether the error, if repeated elsewhere in Ohio, could have affected the outcome.

Dollar gives up the ghost

Posted By Paul Kammueller

The dollar appears to have broken down through recent support levels. Looks like the 2nd downleg of the dollar slide that began a couple of years ago has begun. Should bounce back to revisit the former support (now resistance) level and then resume the slide -- then its off to the races again for gold, oil and other commodities.

XAU index

Posted By Paul Kammueller

What can I say, I'm and index guy! The bull market in the gold markets is now 4 years old, and still pluggin' along. The precious metals mining index has as wild a swings as anything but has been done well over the last 4 years. Now hovering around mid-channel -- lately when it's waffled thusly it's made a sudden jag to the bottom of the channel - but not always. If caught in such a downdraft in this index, at least the pain is mercifully quick as the bottom of the channel is often reached in a month or two before the index resumes upward movement. A good hedge against the sliding dollar if nothing else. It often is, in effect, an inverse of the dollar.

Social Security: Privatization

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Probably has been kicked around here a bit already. But it's been mentioned in a couple of articles last few days, apparently this will be on the slate in the new term.

Personally, I think it's a good idea. Doesn't address the crux of the problem which is too many retirees being supported by a shrinking (proportionally) share of workers (which can ultimately be resolved only by increasing retirement age or by much greater productivity of the workers), but at least it puts the problem in a context where the market can resolve it one way or another.

And spreads capitalist ownership to those who have not participated. Expanding a society of workers owning the means of production and distribution even if just little slivers of it via stock funds: capitalistic socialism. Weird when ya think about it! smile

Re: A Gregorian telescope

I suspect at least partly because of size. As a folded design a gregorian will have an overall geometry and secondary obstruction similar to a cassegrain, but will be considerably longer due to the fact that the secondary must reside outside the prime focus of the primary, whereas in a cassegrain, SCT, or mak-cass the secondary lies inside the prime focus, greatly shortening the tube.

Gorilla Wake

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Funeral for a dead gorilla (arrangements were made by humans), check it out:

Just what do you guys think is really going on here? Gorillas 'paying their respects' to the dead is very weird to say the least. We generally consider only humans to be abstract-thinking enough to grasp concepts of reverence. Is there some extremely primitive level of 'religion' here? Or just a general expression of grief (itself an impressively complex emotion for an animal)

Leading Atheist Wavering?

Posted By Paul Kammueller

Antony Flew, longtime promoter of Atheism, at age 81 seems to be becoming possibly a sort of soft, non-specific deist. But the jury is still out, it sounds like he is still reviewing his position. Still does not believe specifically in the Christian/Islamic god per se and certainly does not believe in the afterlife.

It's possible that the lens is misaligned and needs to be collimated. It's also possible that the focuser isn't quite square with the tube.
