Hi Russ:

On the margins maybe.  I assume though, that California has not gone entirely "mask-free," "damn the distancing" crazy?  Would a different federal response, a Biden response for example, have helped Governor Newsom in a meaningful way?  Don't get me wrong, these graphs could be a whole lot worse without the steps implemented so far and ongoing.  But we are a free country and therefore pay a price when pandemic hits.  As you know, I've never understood the "Blame it all on Trump" mentality... This is not China.  (Where the virus is controlled by iron-fisted police state policies).

You also had incredible masses of people dancing in the streets about a week after the election.  Those cases are beginning to hit in CA, NY, MA, VA, MD and so on just about now.  I really don't think blaming the current mega-spike on Trump is all that persuasive.

I agree with both sentences quoted above.  The bottom line though, is that Trump is inept and the system is easily rebuffing his efforts at a coup.  Just to be clear, I do not think that the lawsuits are a coup attempt, although they appear inept.  Asking the GOP officials to ignore the election results and appoint pro-Trump electors is a ham-fisted coup attempt.

Permit me to channel my inner Aragorn (from the movies, not the book) for a moment:

I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.
A day may come when the courage of of the United States fails,
When we forsake our Constitution and bow to a dictator.

But it is not this day.

An hour of wolves and shattered shields, when the age of liberty comes crashing down.

But it is not this day!

This day we fight!!
By all that you hold dear on this good Earth,
I bid you stand, Men of the West!!!

I think some on this forum way underestimate the gravity of what Trump and the silent lemmings in the GOP are doing.

Bad idea, in my opinion.  For all sorts of reasons discussed before.  I am optimistic that a proper GOP candidate will emerge in 2024, you are not.  We won't have to wait too long to see.

Your last quote above summarizes our interaction over the past 4 years perfectly.  But please note that none of the GOP officials in control of key states has even considered rolling over to Trump and posting an alternative slate of electors.  At least not to my knowledge.  Rather than being lemmings, these GOP officials are quietly defending in the union.

The Supremes will waive this off as a nuisance.  The only question that remains is whether you will apologize to ACB for your inaccurate thread title!  Jim

There you go.  GOP as lemmings or defenders of the Constitution?  You make the call!

Interesting.  As you can imagine lawsuits between the states are kind of rare, but this is one instance where the suit gets filed directly with the Supremes.  I have no idea what procedures are in place for this type of extraordinary case, but there may be some sort of vote before it is dispensed with.  Here is some info on "original cases."

They're fools, and I don't deny it.  But this mistrust directed to ACB is unearned.  At least at this point in time!  The only controversial case she has participated in is the Coronavirus/church case.  And she got it right.  It is acceptable for governors to issue public health orders, but they must be applied to equivalent groups without prejudice.  Or do you think it is acceptable or (based in science) for governors to shut down churches while leaving liquor stores, pot shops and strip clubs open?
