"Rules: The beginning of any process to bring a major bill to the floor is taking it to the House Rules Committee. Rules preps the bill by setting the parameters for debate. Why would we (the Ds) do that? Duh, to advance the bill, avoid default, and possibly avoid a second Trump term. Sounds like Massie might vote to pass this from rules, but if he does not and the Ds refuse to step up, there is blood on all of their hands. I'm assuming default would indeed be cataclysmic. When I read things like "why would we do that..." it makes me wonder whether any of the Ds or Rs believe their own probably over-heated rhetoric... Jim

I suppose, but given the level of doomsday rhetoric surrounding the debt ceiling, why would the Ds on the rules committee indulge in a ceremonial no vote on an issue of extreme importance to the country and to Biden? You've no doubt noted that the Ds want to blame the "risk" of catastrophic, "end of the world" default on Maga Rs, yet they still indulge themselves with ceremonial no votes because of some minor funding cuts? Consider the D below, who preemptively blamed MAGA for a default, and then indulged in a no vote at the rules committee!!
Either the passage of this bill is guaranteed, such that all of the drama is fake, or the threat level of failure to pass the bill is wildly overstated.
As it is, McCarthy is going to be better positioned than Biden or any D to claim that he saved the economy from annihilation. Why would the Ds give that victory to McCarthy? It makes no political sense to me. Jim
