Paul wants us to excise false teachings before they spread like a virus. I think (I hope at least) that with respect to Trump and his disdain for the rule of law, this has occurred and will continue to occur going forward.
We all are influenced by our environment of course - and my circle of R friends are not big-time Trump supporters, so I suppose I am isolated from the "storm the Capitol" crowd. Still, the bad yeast of Trumpism has not yet to my knowledge worked its way into the thoughts and practices of the whole R group.
By the way, I was raised Catholic and still would ID myself as Catholic even though I no longer go to mass. I see in Paul's teaching here the seed of one of the great differences between Protestants and Catholics. Whether or not works matter at all with respect to salvation. This does not effect your point of course, but I have always been leery of "faith and faith alone" teaching. I recognize that genuine people of faith create good works because of their faith. The sincerity of certain louder and more public members of the "I've been saved" crowd has always seemed suspect.
