Russia redux

This article caught my eye on RCP - apparently HRC and Nancy Pelosi think Trump coordinated the Capitol riots with Vladimir Putin.  At least they are willing to speculate to this effect in a public broadcast.

"She [HRC] said the president had "other agendas" while in the White House and hopes that one day it becomes known who exactly the president was "beholden to" and "who pulls his strings."

"I don’t know what Putin has on him politically, financially or personally, but what happened last week was a gift to Putin because Putin wants to undermine democracy in our country and throughout the world," Pelosi said. She said those that took part in the riot were "Putin’s puppets."

My takeaway is that the Democratic party leadership is just as willing to lie, speculate, and distort any plausible truth for political gain as Trump is.  This sort of speculation, in the context of the endless and fruitless collusion investigations, is roughly equivalent to Trump's stupid drumbeat of a stolen election.

Hi James,

Understood, but the FBI investigates a lot of stuff that turns out to be baseless.  See the original Russian collusion story.  Also, Clinton's allegations/lies go much further than speculation about RU involvement in the riot.  She continues to argue, with zero evidence, that Trump has been a Russian stooge since day one.  This has been investigated quite thoroughly and is, at this point, just HRC re-spreading a dead and fully rebutted lie to her die-hard sycophants.   She is financially capitalizing on this lie.  It is certainly a lie detrimental to any national healing.  The whole scenario is completely on par with Trump's modus operandi in my opinion.

Although I have been embarrassed by my vote for Trump in 2016, I still believe that my vote against HRC was the right move.

And the "original Russian collusion story"? A lot of people, yourself included, have either not heard of, forgotten about or developed selective amnesia about this which is the original Russian collusion story: "WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Russia used Republican political operative Paul Manafort and the WikiLeaks website to try to help now-U.S. President Donald Trump win the 2016 election, a Republican-led Senate committee said in its final review of the matter" "The report found President Vladimir Putin personally directed the Russian efforts to hack computer networks and accounts affiliated with the Democratic Party and leak information damaging to Clinton."

Also, Manafort and WikiLeaks is a far cry from any reasonable interpretation of this:  "She said the president had "other agendas" while in the White House and hopes that one day it becomes known who exactly the president was "beholden to" and "who pulls his strings.""

There is exactly the same amount of evidence that Trump was "beholden to" Putin, or that he was a puppet with Putin pulling the strings as there is evidence of massive election fraud.  Look, there is a lot to not like about Trump.  Even so, if one is inclined to believe that he was a Russian stooge throughout his term, then I would say that that partisanship has blinded that person exactly to the same degree that partisanship leads some to believe the 2020 election was stolen.

I personally do not think that Trump believes the election was stolen.  Trump is using that lie to rally his sycophants.  I personally do not believe that Clinton believes Trump was a Russian stooge.  HRC is using that lie to rally her sycophants.  The symmetry is remarkable.

Rod, sometimes I think you and Rich are the same person.  Just because Trump is dirty and bad that does not make Clinton beating on Russia at this point in time any better!

No one could argue with that!  (Well technically, I know of one guy who could, but he is out and about today, apparently!)

Hi Patrick:

I seriously don't understand this line of thinking.  The virus - mother nature in the raw - has us locked down.  The federal response has been haphazard and incompetent at times, like all federal responses to calamities.  It is highly unlikely in my opinion that any other president, even the best of them all (whomever one might believe that to be) would have led a response to a novel and deadly virus that had measurably better outcomes.  The Biden administration certainly would not have.  Those who refuse to wear masks and pandemic deniers would exist no matter who was president.  Trump may have emboldened the rule breakers, but it is silly to think that everyone would have fallen in line under President Biden.  Also, the virus was going to get it's share of pain and death even if everyone had fallen into line and scrupulously followed best practices.

It is a fantasy to think that a greater level of competence at the federal level would have eliminated this year of pain and death.  At the very best, there might have been a slight but measurable decrease in infections and death, but I personally doubt it, and at what cost?

Meanwhile, the vaccines were developed in record time.  The distribution proceeds pretty well in some states and less so in others, but that is the nature of a vast mobilization in a large and diverse country.

Meanwhile, the infection map, which I review every day has never looked better.  Green states are those showing a decline in infections over the past two weeks.  Your home state is an outlier, Any idea why the infections have skyrocketed in VA?

Anyway, the overall map has never looked this good.  https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases-50-states Look for a return to normalcy this summer or fall, no matter whether Biden, you, me, or nobody is president.
