We saw bears!

The black bear population is slowly increasing in North Florida. We supposedly have a family of six that live in the woods back behind our house. The folks on the next road behind us keep seeing them, but I have only seen some scat around my place.

Good luck with the panthers. You may have to go out to the Tallahassee Museum to see those. I know a guy from Perry who said he used to see them fairly regularly when he was a kid, but that was back in the 50's.

Sky Commander

When you turn the Sky Commander on, the version will show on the screen just before it prompts you to find your alignment stars. Is yours the black or white box? The white box would most likely be v.3.38 and is not upgradable, while the black XP4 probably has the latest updated version. If it's the XP4, it should have come with a data cable for downloads. You can go to www.skyeng.com for instructions on downloading.

Meade 127ed vs ES 127ed

I currently own a Meade 127ED, and have been very impressed with it during the year and a half or so that I have owned it. In fact, it may be Floyd's old 127ED, as it came with a Wyorock focuser and the white 8x50 finder.

Anyway, as Floyd said, it is about as close to color free as you could want from a doublet apo. I don't really see color on the limb of the moon, but there is color on bright stars like Vega. I mainly use it for solar, lunar, planetary and OCs, visual only, so it suits my needs just fine.

Having said that, it is not of the same quality as a Tak FS127 that I owned several years ago, which goes down as one of the finest refractors that I have ever owned. I did not pay anywhere near the same price for the Meade as I did for the Tak either.

I've never looked through the ES either, but they get pretty decent reviews.

Knight Owl are repackaged GSOs (Guan Sheng Optical), but uglier in appearance. Optically they are fine, and I use pairs of the 15mm and 12.5mm plossls in my binoviewer, as well as a pair of 9mm Enhanced Super Wides, which seem to be the exact same eyepieces as the Orion Expanse eyepieces. Good prices and lightweight, so they are keepers for me, even though I have more expensive ultrawides in my case.
